API test question

So I've always been curious as the proper way to read my test.

It says to put the vile up against the white side on the card.
Now do I just hold it up to the card or press it against the card. Because I get two different readings...

Pic 1 is slightly off the card. Pic 2 is pressed up against the card...

I know the feeling.
I think the appropriate reading should be done with the white background receiving light. In your 2nd pic, your test tube is blocking the light. That at least makes sense on the Ammonia test when I know there isn't any in the tank.

Yeah I always read it with a little light... but if you watch the video posted they are placing it against the card... :/
