I wanna build the baffle design shown in yellow in the image below. Is the baffle in red necessary? If so, what's its purpose? Thanx

yes, it prevents bubbles from entering the return pump and traveling into the display.

Really not sure why the baffles are needed between the filter sock and skimmer honestly. It’s just using valuable space.. zero need for them.

In that sump it looks like it's there so the water is forced to flow through the sock. My waterbox sump is similar. The drain pipes empty into a chamber that flows to the sock vs the pipes going strait to the socks like many do.
