Hi all, my apt complex needs to refinish my bathtub and I'm wondering how concerned I need to be about the solvents they are using as it regards my reef tank (75g total volume).

They are working with me to schedule this on a day that is warm enough to have all my windows etc opened up, and they are using a big extraction fan during the work to remove the fumes, but I still have concerns about how this may affect my reef.

I don't know yet which chemicals they are using (I requested the MSDS sheets), but suspect if they can still get it they will try to use methylene chloride, which I understand is more toxic than some of the more modern chemicals that are used.

Do I need to be worried about my brute cans full of water?

Appreciate any thoughts and advice! I think they are planning to do the work this Monday, Feb 24.

If it’s fiberglass/acrylic tub refinishing, It smells bad and lingers for a while. Keeping the door closed and fan running is probably your only good option. No idea what it can do to a tank though. Glass lid for the tank maybe would help keep it from absorbing anything in the air for the day???

I could saran wrap the top of the tank, but there is still the sump and I don't know about cutting off all gas exchange...

Also the patio door that I plan on leaving open is the primary means for the fumes to exit my apt and my tank is right next to it. :/

Wet towels covering the tank and sump will help some it will allow air through though it will be lessened and a lot of the nasty vapors VOCs should be larger than air. I have done this in the past with refinishing of floors from the sanding to the staining and poly. Didnt loose anything. Also as much fresh air as possible too.
