So I have been feeding my royal gramma the cheapest mysis shrimp I found at the time which was about a month ago. I feed him a LOT when I feed once a day because he always seems starving. Maybe he needs to be fed twice a day, but my question is could it be possible that the mysis shrimp brand I am feeding (not sure which one but cheapness implies lack of quality) is low in nutrients and that's why he always looks hungry?

Question is, what brand of mysis shrimp has the best nutritional value so I don't have to overfeed?

Fish always act like they’re starving. It’s normal behavior as the ocean is somewhat of a desert and most fish will eagerly take the opportunity to catch prey even if they’re not actually starving. For reference. I feed my tank one cube of hikari frozen mysis per day. This is enough for two clownfish, a small hippo tang, a sixline wrasse, an azure damsel and a mandarin dragonet. If you’re really worried about nutritional value, you could always add a drop or two of selcon or something similar to the cube.

Yeah that is true. I only say he looks hungry because his belly is recessed in slightly, nothing worrying, but right after feeding it is usually pretty bulgy. So it seems like he's getting enough just not putting on weight. I feed maybe one eighth of the block for my clownfish and royall gramma plus cuc

Hmmm....pricing doesn't necessarily have to correlate with quality. One can buy high quality seafood, mix it, and freeze, and it will still come up cheaper than if commercial brands do it. There're also other factors to consider as well, like shipping, harvesting, and packaging, which can all affect how much something is going to cost.

That being said, I've heard good things about Hikari Mysis (regular) and PE Mysis. Most of the seahorse keepers I know seem to use mostly those. The Hikari Jumbo Mysis, on the other hand, I may never buy again due to how big they are and how tough they are for most fish to go after.

I think you could up it to half a cube per day. Just do it in two feedings. It shouldn’t have a major impact on water quality.

Hikari hands down, the shrimp are small in the cubes, the flat pack shrimp are a lil bigger, also comes in jumbo

sally’s is OK, Omega Brand always looks likes its been thawed then re-frozen

Agree with Hikari. I use the cubes and feed 2 cubes a day and the equivalent of 3 cubes of other frozen including LRS. Hikari just seems to be cleaner and looks much more fresh, never discolored.

Well I will be picking up some Hikari next time I am at the LFS. Thanks for the inputs!

I like Hikari since besides the regular/jumbo mysis they also offer a third similar to the PE Mysis.

Hikari mysis are always so tiny.
I prefer the big PE mysis. Sanfrancisco bay or whatever are decent size as well.

Have you tried the jumbo mysis that only come in flat packs versus the cubes? Quite a bit larger in size and I say bigger then the PE ones.

Nope, I had no idea they existed. I guess the fish stores around me just don't carry them.
Thanks for the heads up though.

Piscine Energetics Mysis Shrimp are the ones I prefer, as they are meatier than the Hikari brand and seem to satisfy the fish better. If you have very small fish, however, the Hikari are better as small fish have a hard time with the PE size.

The only negative to the PE Mysis is that they are extremely dirty so I usually have to rinse them a few times before feeding; the Hikari are much cleaner.

Hey do you have the opportunity to feed them smaller quantities over a few hours or do you add it all at once?
I do, I can try feeding smaller quantities multiple times a day but during the school year (grad student) I wouldn't be able to do that all the time. I can definitely try it out now though.
