Biggest clam in a 40 gallon

I want to know what the is the biggest clam I can reasonably keep in a 40 gallon breeder. I really love the look of clams and in my 40 gallon I am rearranging the rocks. To be like two smaller tower on each end, instead of one big tower, and I want a big clam to be the center piece, Thanks.

This thread below will give you some idea's, but you can keep some fairly large clams. Generally speaking, "small" clams are usually sold 1"-3", large clams are about 6"-7", to get larger would take some research and searching.

One question, when someone says there clam is six inches, is that wide or tall, and when your talking about the size there sold at how big would they be full grown?

wide and is usually shell length ime
maxima or derasa would be your best bets, but they all take years to get to a large size and i rarely see truely large clams for sale and if they are they cost $$$

I think there are 3 options for species you can keep in a 40b, the smallest is crocea, but they require more light than others (all require full spectrum high light), they usually max out at 4"-6" and have a wide range in mantle colors/patterns, the other two are noae (teardrop) and maxima. They get bigger, but one would be fine in a 40b. But if you want to have multiple clams, I would stick to a few crocea and you would be fine. I've kept several in a 10g just fine. If you haven't done so already, buy James Fatherree's book on clams (it's on Amazon) here.

If you are going for a centerpiece clam between two islands and have the right spectrum to highlight their colors, I would look for a bright pink or blue squamosa. WYSIWYG would be ideal in this scenario so you an pick the brightest specimen. You can always adorn the rest of the tank with maximas and croceas for additional color!

any pictures of a true pink one? ive seen some but they look more brown to me. squamosa will end up breaking the bottom of a 40 breed but it would take many years

By then definitely an upgrade! For a squammie, at least you can pick it up at that time, as opposed to a giga!

The reason why I suggest the smaller clams is the Ca/alk demand that a larger clam would put on that size tank. You would have to buy more equipment (CaRx, etc) or dose so much for that size tank, that it would become a burden. Although, it would be cool, you're better off sticking to smaller clams for now. Plus, a larger clam will destroy everything outside of the tank if it ever expels water and it will, trust me.

I had a Derasa that was approaching 9 inches in a 50 Gal Breeder. It was crazy! I was dosing stupid amounts of A and B.

It don't know how big it was here, but I do know this was considerably before I got rid of it. I couldn't keep up with demand.

It truly was stunning. Watching that mantle spread out. The colors on the edges, it was very cool!

I totally love clams. I am scheming on how I can hook up a clam tank to my main tank :). No derasa's for me though. They are very pretty, but they grow too fast and too big.
