Well we cleaned out our reef dynamics bio pellet reactor for the first time. It was the worst smell ever!

You bet the skimmer cup smells even worse so it pays to keep it cleaned out also...A DIY trick to keep the oder down to 0 coming from the skimmer is to take a mesh bag (old nylon sock panty, hose leg etc.) put some activated charcoal in it ...fold over the open end to seal it and tape it down....now place this on top your skimmer cup lid it covers the vent holes and any escaping air is filtered by the carbon...been doing this for years...by golly it WORKS !! Just a trick from the OLE MAN
