I recently dipped some small frags of birds nest in some seachem reef tip to try and get to get rid of some green hair algae, I cut off some pieces that had a lot of algae on them, and I dipped them for 15 minutes and brushed off with a tooth brush. Today they are bleached bone white and no polyp extension, did I mess up? Did I dip them for too long? Or are they stressed from being cut? Kinda bummed but they were pretty cheap

I did also deal with a large alkalinity swing, last week I overdosed some reef buffer and shot my DKH to 14+, this week I have managed to get the DKH to 10/10.5, by doing several water changes.

15 minutes is long, with no heater even worse.
Max for me is 5.

Toothbrush, unless you are very very gentle is harsh. I will only toothbrush on the plug or already dead spots to wipe away algae.

One more thing, BN are very finicky. I would never recommend one as a first or test piece.

Ahhh yeah, I had a feeling it was too long. Smh 🤦

If your in Connecticut I can give you some.

3-5 minutes sufficient and I would not use dip for purpose of algae control. There are additive safe for this but many are alternatives and not solutions. Lengthy dip you did would impact certain corals

So just to be clear, the BN is basically a goner ?

Not necessarily. Ive seen many of these bounce back. The lessened chance of recovery is when algae starts to grow on the skeleton.

You did see my picture right? It’s just hard to believe there’s any life left after it being that white but idk lol

I have and its the loss of zooxanthellae which gives it its color to turn white but this inner algae can go back if conditions improve. This is often temporary bleaching and caused by excess light and/or water flow, high alk and other deficiencies such as salinity, magnesium and shock from sudden changes

If it's bone White and there's no polyps, you're actually see holes where the polyps were, yes it's dead.
If you see any polyps at all there's a slight chance. And that slight chance would mean absolutely stable parameters, perfect conditions for that coral to survive.
