What is the typical temperament of a black tang? Are they similar to yellow/purples?

I'm going to be adding one (dream fish) and I've already got a few tangs together so I know the game (mirrors, food, more mirrors lol, banish to sump)

Currently have-
Purple
Yellow
Naso
Achilles
Clown
Sailfin

The clown and sailfin are in the frag tank, others in the display. I currently do not have any aggression in the tanks - swats here and there, that's about it. I'm debating where to introduce him first.

It’s always tricky to add one tang to an established group and you have some potentially aggressive ones. I’ve never seen mine bother a soul and I have nine large tangs in a 300g tank. I was very strategic in how they were added though. I’ve got most of the baddies too 🤣

Right. I was the same, very strategic with adding all of them. That's also why the sailfin and clown are in the frag tank lol.

Which tank would you put it in? My tangs are pretty big and the black tang is small, 2". Most of my tangs are 5"+. The only smaller tang is the clown, and he's 3".

How big is each tank? Smaller is better for new additions in my experience, seen as less of a threat I guess.
240g main, 50g frag

yea, that's why I went with a smaller fish to avoid established personalities as much as possible.

Do you think an acclimation box will help? I never did one for tangs but with other fish I have -- the majority of the fish are scared of it from what I've seen.

I definitely won’ wouldn’t put it in a 50g tank with two other tangs. Mine is huge, they get very big. I’d put it in the larger tank and add at night after lights out. I’ve had good luck adding multiple fish at the same time if that’s an option, they can be different types. Seems to help reset their routines. Good luck!

My line of thinking on this is to place him temporarily in the frag tank first. I want to do this because it'll be easier to move him if something is going wrong w the sailfin and give him some rest after shipping. Once he settles I want to move him to the display w the majority of the tangs. The only issue in the frag tank would be the sailfin but I could also move him to the sump easily since getting them out of there is easier. Ultimately I want him added to the display.
