Greetings from China.

Just registered but I have been frequently visiting here for quite some time already. Now I have a big headache with my new puffer.

13 years ago I set up a 90L FOT and put 4 fish in it. 2 clowns, 1 blue tang and 1 yellow tang. All of them lived for 11-13 years. At the beginning of this year the last one was gone. I was so sad and refused to do it anymore. So the tank was never used again.

This summer my wife and kid went to the beach and caught a puffer, and they took it back…!!! it’s a six hour drive from the sea so I was not able to send it back. I also have no time or resource to set up my 90L tank immediately, so I had to do a fish-in cycle in a 10L pico tank as the last chance to make it survive.

Honestly I was pretty confident, as the puffer is only around 4-5cm long. I didn’t even know what puffer it is. Spent quite some time on research and found it’s called “Takifugu alboplumbeus”.

Things went quite well. I just checked the test numbers and change water everyday. About a week ago ammonia went 0. Nitrite and nitrate were still there but not alarming. The puffer was doing better and better. It ate well and started to interact with me.

4 days ago I replaced my dollar store filter/powerhead with a Sicce. In the afternoon the puffer even learned to eat pellets. It was very active and also learned how to dance with my finger.

Then I went out for dinner. And when I came back, I found the him totally blind?!! He was still very exciting when I feed him but apparently could not see anything. The eyes looked normal, no fog. He was swimming cautiously, bumping into things. But as soon as the food touches his mouth he eats them like crazy.

It’s 3 days since he went blind but nothing changed.

A few other threads mentioned similar situation but I know it’s complicated and it would be hard to get a definitive answer. Just want to share the story and see if anyone had similar experience.

I can’t believe the puffer went from perfect condition to blindness in just a couple of hours. So sad.

Ammonia may have built up quickly and please describe more what you have for a filter. Also, this is often a result, removing a specimen from the wild.
Please provide a 30 second you tube video using no blue, but rather Bright white light intensity
Also have you tested water, and by what method?

The tank is still cycling. I test ammonia and nitrite everyday. Since 7 days ago ammonia went to 0 and never came back up. Nitrite is quite high at 0.6 but even after two 50% WC in 20 hours it still reads the same. Maybe something wrong with the test kit? I feel that nitrite might be the cause but I don’t think that number can be avoided during a fish-in cycle…right? Should I do a 100% WC?

The filter for the pico tank is Sicce shark pro nano with 30pp and carbon filter. I added some siporax mini in it.

Yeah, should never taken it from the wild but since my kid did it all I want is to make him survive and I will send him back when I have the chance to drive him to his home again.

Will upload the video tomorrow as it’s now midnight here…
