I want to know if I could put a blue tang in a 75 gallon tank without upgrading. I know people say you need like 150-180 gallons, but my fish store violet aquarium said I could put one in a 75 in person (it even says it on their website). I have lot a good amount of rocks with a good amount of space left over in the tank.

Not recommended. Blue tangs can get a foot fully grown and need alot of swimming room. 75 isn't going to be able to provide that. I would opt for a smaller tang like a bristletooth tomini or a kole tang

@Trustyworm
Your local fish store sells fish. That’s why they advertise.

I have put small Blue Tang’s in 75G twenty five year mature tank. After 5 years, I needed to drain tank to remove the Hippo.

Can I keep one for around 3 years before it gets too big and then rehome them?

Yes. However, individual fish behavior is not always predictable. When I noticed maturing Tang becoming a bully, I sold back to LFS.

It depend on who you ask? Some examples: Blue Zoo 75 gal, Live Aquaria 180 gal. Your original question was without up grading. I would say no, at about 3 years or less it might outgrow your tank.

I would also find a new fiah store

My vote would be no. They generally grow very quickly to a certain size and then slow down, so even a tiny one in store might be too big for a 75 gallon within a year.

A tomini would look awesome in a 75 and they will nip at algae too. Blue hippos are a dime a dozen. They are so common that (to me) they are kind of boring. I don’t mean to demean your opinion of what fish are beautiful, for the record.

if its the only tang....if all other fish are wrasses and clowns....

I don't see a problem with it.

I've had a few Hippos over my 25yrs.

they aren't a really active swimmers. they tend to like to hang out in certain areas to graze slowly. not sprint across the tank

never seen one get 12ins unless heavily fed in a large 300+ 8ft tank

most of my Hippos were in my 6ft 180g.... they never grew past 6ins.

longest one I've had owned was about 5-6yrs old. never got to the oversensationlized 12in mark.

if it's the ONLY larger fish bigger than a wrasse, you'll be fine IMO

I would mostly agree. Several hippos I have had never got more than ~9”, the biggest for 7 years in a 300+ gal (pictured). One thing that always crosses my mind when someone asks for a recommendation about a hippo tang and tank size is will you be QT; imo, this is a bigger factor in determining if the hobbyist is suitable to care for a hippo than tank size…

visceral reactions to tangs and tank size should generally disqualify the recommendation.

And of course 75g actually means 60g with rocks.
