CAC to remove DOC?

Interesting article but carbon is carbon and cac is just a finer particle.
The thing I did not like is you must buy this carbon brand only.
I have never had a problem running gac in a reactor.

One general comment that I'd make before seeing the experiment and data behind the claim is that I believe it could be misleading to say things like

The impact on Trace elements is very very little due to the superior catalytic carbon thats used here.

if the water tested did not reflect the organics present in a normal reef tank. Perhaps it did, I don't know, but a test on raw seawater will not show the binding of trace elements to organics that are then bound to the GAC, nor will it reflect the potential for organics to compete with organics for binding.

I don't see any data supporting the claims. Is it elsewhere?

Seems like just a preference for a particular brand of GAC, but without knowing what it was compared to or how, it's hard to comment.

Since it is RM, I don’t expect any actual data to be presented. Just a lot of us trust us bro.

I was just interested if there could be any way that “different” carbons actually produce “different” results or is this just more fluff

In terms of trace elements released, there certainly could be differences based simply on how it is prepared and washed.

The chemical nature of the surface can impact the binding of both inorganic ions and organics.

GAC essentially has regions of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic nature. The hydrophobic sections are mostly just carbon, with some H. The hydrophilic sections contain carboxylic acids (like acetate in vinegar), and -OH groups (like in phenol and ethanol). It is the carboxylates and phenolates that can bind trace elements such as iron.

One can adjust the relative amount of these when designing how to manufacture GAC, but if you remove too many of the polar groups, the materials becomes too hydrophobic to wet properly (like adding graphite to water) and will not work well.

FWIW, I think that if one wants to make claims about impurities released and trace elements bound, one needs to do it as I mentioned above in real reef tank water AND one needs to base it on the amount of organic removed, not on a per gram or cup or whatever.

Again, maybe they did that. i just don't know without seeing the experiment and data. But a GAC that merely releases less and binds less trace elements is not necessarily an improvement if it also binds less organics.
