Lost a coral this week...running daily alkalinity checks as part of a project...happened to check my calcium level and it had crashed from 417 dec 29 to 200 tonight (Hanna checker- brand new)
only thing different was trying Kalk for the first time running in my ato. Mixed calc at 2 tsps in 1 gallon jug- waited for the settling then put into the ato. Then added 2.6 gals of RODI to the ATO. Math serves me right - kalk ratio to RODI .55555556 per gallon - unless my calculator is broke. i figure the ratio a bit more than 1/2 tsp per gallon - well within a slow introduction recommendation. I have no idea what happened- but I removed the ATO, washed, cleaned of all residue and put back in service with only RODI. The purpose of trying the talk to was raise the alkalinity...ph has its usual diurnal swing, but it does not affect the corals- softies, LPS and SPS. I have added reef foundation- again smaller amount than recommended- and will re-check in the late afternoon. Any thoughts from the experienced reefers? other parameters- Salinity- 1.026, temp- 77-79 varies through the day- apex controlled, ph again diurnal but will swing from 7.9 too 8.04- Mag- 1320 NO4 ,2 ppm PO4 .08 ppb (Hanna ULR). All other corals are fine- Im saddened at the loss of this coral, it was very pretty to look at...and its a loss of a gift from mother nature.
