In my experience, If you are able to control your nutrients, and water chemistry and keep it on the ideal, then you shouldn't have any problem growing acros.

Having said that, Acroporas are not created equal, there are ones that are hardy or can tolerate a little bit of tank instability. As mentioned by others avoid any smooth skin or deep water acros, they are on the different level.

I found Green Slimer, Valida, Bonsai, Red Planet and Diablo hardy. Birdsnest are weird, they seem to be easy but they will just withered for what ever weird reasons.
