Hello!
I live in a barren wasteland of LFS's here in Oregon and since this weekend it won't be raining(it rains 9 months out of the year here..so it's kinda a big deal). I want to ride my motorcycle up to Portland and pick up some new coral.

Its about a ~2 hour drive or ~115 miles. I have saddlebags on my motorcycle but my suspension is pretty stiff. Would it be okay in my saddle bags for two hours? It will vibrate quite a bit so that is my main concern. I was planning on throwing a couple hand warmers in my saddle bags and placing the bags of coral in a Tupperware bin on top of the hand warmers inside my bags. It will be about 70 degrees Saturday so they shouldn't lose heat too bad. This might also sound insane...but....there are no dumb questions right?...will the noise have any affect on the coral?! I have pretty loud exhaust on my motorcycle and it will be right next to the saddlebag the coral will be in. I just don't know if sound frequencies have any negative affects on coral if it's blasting them in the polyps for 2 straight hours.

I would love to hear your feedback on this. I don't want to come home and see that I've vibrated my coral to death. It shouldn't be that bad but nevertheless it's more than a car for sure.

Here is a pic of the bike from last fall before i put the saddlebags on.

Depends on how they are bagged. You could get one of those travel cases for corals.

But boxes get way more beat up than you’d think during shipping. They get thrown around, flipped around, etc

Yes, coral will be fine. If you get anything branching ask if they can put a protective cup around it (imagine a little plastic dipping container with a cut in the bottom for the frag stem).

Awesome! I think ive seen those containers! I will ask if they have those. Thanks!

Im not sure how they bag them yet. Ive haven't been to this store yet. Its called Cuttle Fish and Corals in Portland, OR. I've heard a lot of greta things about it so fingers crossed they have good packaging!

Package it in a nice container. If you don’t have a holding cup you can also throw some lose plastic bags in there to limit their ability to move around. Make sure u put it in one of these bad boys

As a former sporty rider, just stick em in your jacket, that where I put everything. Until I got my winneabago chopper then I had all the storage in the world :) And now I dont even have a bicycle, somedays I miss being cool lol
In your jacket they be safe from vibration and they stay warm. How many you getting ?

Are you sure the vibrations and bumps won’t damage the skeletons?

I’m imagining a delicate hammer coral’s flesh getting ripped off.

I have never ridden a motorcycle before but if I was in your shoes, I would do what was mentioned above. Ask for protective cups, pack them in a soft cooler… but I would not put them in direct contact with a motorcycle. I would think placing the soft cooler in a backpack for the ride would probably be a good idea to limit bumps and vibrations.

My buddy has a sportster and it's pretty cool! I tried riding a sportster a couple times but i am way too tall. My knees were touching my elbows! It sucks because i wanted to build a Dirt-ster.

As for how many i am getting? I was thinking of getting a hammer, a frogspawn and maybe a torch / goni?

Exactly what im thinking. I imagined it would almost act like an ultrasonic cleaner and shred the coral into pieces.

When i traveled with coral on my motorcycle i used an insulated back pack cooler.
Amazon product

This is a link to one similar on amazon

I actually have a friend with a backpack cooler from Costco! It fits an entire 18 pack of beer(beer is my favorite unit of measurement). I might ask to borrow it for this then. That's a good idea.

What types of corals are you planning on getting?

BattleCorals sticks the frag plugs through a cup which shields the corals from contact. It’s pretty ingenious.

Im kind of a Fimbriaphyllia nut. I will almost certainly end up getting a hammer. Maybe a frogspawn / octospawn, maybe a torch? I won't shy away from any bounce mushrooms or bubble coral either.

Maybe you can replicate something like this with styrofoam cups? You can pierce a hole through the bottom to insert the plug.
