So I have an a new 15 gal tank, still don't have any fish. The tank have been running for about 2 months, but the magnesium and calcium is too low (mg 1000 and cal 370). I did an a almost full water change because there's nothing in there yet, but the parameters didn't changed??? I use Reef Crystals, but is the same salt that I use for my display reef tank and there the magnesium is about 1500 and calcium about 450. I really don't know what to do...

Sometimes the magnesium in a bucket or a bag will segregate so that the top layer is high and the bottom is low in magnesium as the bucket is unevenly distributed with mag chunks, an artifact of man made salts.

Get a good magnesium supplement and use it to boost the tank with low magnesium, as presumably the tests you use are telling the truth?

I've used one of the DYI buffer recipe systems by Randy Holmes. I've found that by using this, I can control and stabilize, the calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity. It is one of the older recipes of his, yet it works perfectly for me. I would not raise it. Magnesium testing is surprisingly inaccurate and I do not recommend dosing based off testing.

There has been no consumption in such a tank, so the level exactly reflects what came in the salt mix. Either salinity is very low or the test is off.

The number you give for RC at 1500 is a measurement you made with that same kit?

Yeah, is the same kit. The kits are from Salifert.

Yeah, is the same kit. The kits are from Salifert.

Then either the salinity is way different, or it’s test error. Nothing can drop magnesium in water than has not seen a far larger consumption of calcium.
