**2 April 2026 Update**
Hey everyone! Again, not so great with the updates on here haha! It’s been fun to watch and now I have some fuzzy sticks, I’ve finally made it into my goal of a mixed reef setup! It’s hard to believe that after around 10 months, I’m at the point I was able to even consider acros, let alone have some in the tank! I’m currently waiting to see if the PC rainbow acro bounces back….story time:
So, in dealing with the GHA problem I was having where it was choking out my golden eye zoas, I got a pincushion urchin. It did amazing with the GHA…and then got hungry and a little bulldozy where I have come to believe that it munched on my acro (all things have led to that it’s not bleaching and was just munched on due to the fact it happened from the base, has not progressed further, and I’ve still had polyp extension visible.) Working through it and doing a wait and see with it after moving the urchin to the back portion of my tank with my macro algae (we’ll see as it’s been about three weeks since I moved the urchin and the acro hasn’t died yet). I also believe it had bulldozed my blasto since the frag was doing very well and then one of the heads suddenly died and looked like it had been poked by something. Also saw it on my peach tip torch eating at the base, which exposed it enough for the last gorilla grab in my tank to come out (and got him out from the tank now). So all that to say, the urchin worked so well for algae that I then ran into the problem of it being on the verge of starving and had to move him to where he could get a ton of algae. I am looking at options to either trade him in to the LFS I got him from or even just give it back if they don’t do it since I don’t want it starving and also don’t want it munching on my coral.
In the process and thanks to my YWG and pistol, the Florida clove polyp I got from
WWC died (it had been buried one to many times I think and no matter how quickly I tried to unbury it, I think the damage had been done and it finally succumbed) I moved a few frags around to get a new frag I got from ReefEscape to replace the clove polyp since I am a fan of how they look (the only frag in my tank that isn’t
WWC haha). Also, a valuable lesson was learned in how much epoxy (or rather how little) I should use. To move my jewel thief, it was…well….an emotional journey for me (and probably a very traumatic one for the jewel thief) to say the least. I have since revised my application of epoxy to the frags and this was the time that I identified all the other coral chomps from the urchin. All of that played into my decision to try and not take the acro out and dip it or do anything else since I had already been in and about the tank so much I didn’t want to add to the stress/trauma.
I’ve had a few minor ups and downs with my alk (going up to 9.4 and then adjusting my doser and it going down to 7.6 the next week) however, we are stabling off again and all changes I was fortunate to not over correct too quickly thanks to some great mentorship in my BIL. Now it’s stead as she goes.
I also just got this new frag rack to house/acclimate my new coral frags from the
WWC live sale (got a gift card for my birthday and so well…..the timing worked out perfectly haha!). Bought the frag rack to have as a necessary feature from having the YWG and pistol bury my frags as they acclimate because that has been a real issue for all of my frags in the past and it’s been a constant game of give enough time to acclimate but also get them mounted quickly so they don’t get buried. (Literally just got the frags in minutes before this picture, so they'll need a second to adjust before extending)
Other than the drama above, the mushroom has already dropped a little baby that is growing which is wild to see! And with the GHA gone, my zoas are starting to sprout new heads again! The hammer is dividing and candy cane has already divided twice! It’s been awesome to see it grow over the course of months in taking these photos and I can’t wait to mount my new HNG (AKA, the crown jewel of my tank)! Thank you to Alex and the team for making it happen!
Until next time! Cheers
