What's up Reef2Reef!?

I have been coming here for a few years now in search of answers watching from the shadows (I've posted almost nothing but a few replies) and decided it's about time I started a build thread!

A little of my backstory...I got into the hobby a little over 3 years ago with a 20 gallon Top Fin LED Bubble Wall starter kit :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: needless to say I've been learning ever since. Starting with realizing I'd bought a freshwater starter kit & that I couldn't just go to the store that day and buy a pair of clownfish & an anemone. I was pretty determined to figure out a way to make it work, and dove headfirst into learning about ammonia cycling & anything else I could, mainly through the BRSTV YouTube. I was enthralled by all things reefing and quickly got some inverts in the tank, but was terrified I would kill a fish if I added it too soon. A few months later, I moved and took my tank with me. After a while I finally got a clownfish and thought I had it all figured out. I even got a little 6 gallon corner tank (also TopFin, lol) for my bedroom since my 20 gallon was in the living room at my apartment. Then I got a big promotion in my golf business job and went from 45-50 hour weeks to 60, usually 60-70 hours/week, and a new relationship on top of that. I decided to get a Lawnmower Blenny to help fight back a merciless attack of GHA, but I was so busy & clueless about keeping a saltwater tank that I eventually threw in the towel when all my fish & inverts died. Fast forward to a year ago, I moved from PA to MN to make a career change and work for family and decided to try my hand at things again - this time with a more aggressive approach of getting a bunch of coral (that I had almost no knowledge of how to keep), and quickly was back in over my head & felt disenchanted by the hobby once more. There were a few great LFS's out there which blew me away compared to the Petco/Petsmart scene I had grown accustomed to in my hometown, and I went full send on fish, corals & trying to buy gear and supplements to solve any problems I ran into. In October I moved back to PA with nothing but a few hermit crabs & zoas in a container of saltwater, got a 10 gallon aqueon tank & threw them in. I decided a bit of a drive was worth it to see what LFS's I could check out around here & got some snails, hermit crabs, more zoa frags, along with a BTA & some GSP. BTA didn't make it, but I still have the GSP & zoas. I had to leave the tank for my Mom to take care of for 4 months while I wasn't able to do it myself & was shocked to see that my corals & inverts survived with nothing but occasional pellets and weekly water changes. This made me reevaluate everything I thought I knew about reefing...I went back and rewatched the 52 Weeks, and started getting into the Reef Builders podcast, as well as Tidal Gardens and WWC YouTube. I'm proud to say I now have over a dozen happy corals growing out in that 10 gallon tank, (including some SPS, which I had thought was impossible), along with a handful of hermits, a BTA & a pair of Snowflake Clowns from ORA. Finally getting a taste of success and remaining diligent in continuing to learn & keeping things simple has given me the confidence to try my hand at a true reef tank.

ANYWAYS...I'm really excited to get this tank wet. I knew I wanted to go a good deal bigger (but not big enough that my parents will throw me out). As much as I would love to have a fully plumbed setup & go 100+ gallons, it's just not realistic, and I'm not necessarily confident in my ability to figure out a really complex system with a sump, refugium, etc. For now, I'm going to opt for an AIO system and work my way up to a more legit setup when I get my own place again in a few years.

After some shopping around, I've decided to go with a Red Sea Max E 260. I was also looking at Waterbox 50 & 65 AIO Plus packages and the IM 50 & SR 60, but I like the dimensions of the E260 a little better. I would've loved to have gone with a 4' as opposed to 3', but Waterboxes are backordered for over a month & I was able to save about $500 on the system when I ordered it during the sale Red Sea is having for MDW. Plus I like a lot of the features that the RS has, and the fact that I can upgrade the E260 to run a true sump down the road if I choose.

So I've got everything ordered to get myself started & can't wait to get started. Here's what I got:

Red Sea Max E 260 system - comes with 2 lights, 2 return pumps, media rack, carbon & bio media, skimmer & a few other extras I'm probably forgetting.
-Nero 5 (may end up getting a second one down the road, we'll see)
-Eheim 150w heater
-RedSea ATO+ & reef can - really like the Smart features built into this & temp monitoring capability via ReefBeat app
-20 lbs of Carib Sea Fiji Pink
-20 lbs of Carib Sea Special Grade
-15 lbs of Marco Shelf Rock
-25 lbs of Marco Reef Saver
-2 Medium Marco Foundation Rocks
-Epoxy, Glue, Insta Set (Plan is to go for a HNSA style aquascape - if there's one thing I'm confident about, it's my ability to aquascape, lol. Hoping to create something really cool & special for this tank)
-AF Life Source
-MicroBacter Dry Rock Starter Kit (QuickCycl, MicroBacter Clean & MicroBacter Start XLM)
-AlgaeBarn Galaxy Pods & Phyto
-Tropic Marin salt
*May put in a ReefMat roller down the road - would love to hear people's thoughts/experiences with them, I've heard a lot of good things

I already have Hanna Checkers for Nitrate, Phosphate & Alkalinity, and AquaForest Calcium & Magnesium test kits. Will likely move my Seneye monitor from my 10 gallon to track Ammonia while I cycle the new system. I've learned my lesson in the past, and will be going lights-off this time around, for at least the first few weeks/month.

Any advice is gladly welcome! Especially if you have experience with the same/similar system.

Here's what I plan to stock:

CUC:
-Nassarius Snails
-Trochus Snails
-Blue & Red Leg Hermit Crabs (?)
-Emerald Crabs (?)
-Maybe an Urchin - looking for input on the compatibility as I've never kept one with corals in the tank & I feel like they'd poke the crap out of them
-Sand Sifting Star

-Carpet or Bubble Tip Anemone

Fish:
-Clown pair
-Mandarin
-Red Tailspot Blenny and/or Lawnmower Blenny
-Pajama Cardinals (#?)
-Royal Gramma
-Juvenile Blue Hippo, Purple, Yellow, Naso, Powder Blue Tang - undecided what species (🐠🚔I know there are a lot of mixed opinions on tank size for these, but I'll be adding a 100+ gallon system in 2-3 years when I have my own place again and can move them when needed)
-Others (?) Pretty open to suggestions, I like fish with some personality & utilitarian species as well

Coral: I want to dip my feet into some LPS on this tank, but will probably have a pretty true mixed reef with plenty of SPS & softies
-Zoas - probably a few islands isolated in the sand to prevent them from taking over
-Hammer/Torch/Frogspawn
-Montis
-Acros
-Porites, Cyphastrea, Psammacora, other SPS
-Goniopora
-Duncans
-GSP - there's just something I love about GSP on the back wall
-Xenia - will likely put this on the back wall as well
-Others (?) Mushroom, leather (may have to trim back my Soloman Hairy Leather from my 10g in the near future, could be my first test coral)

Anyone have SPS encrusting their glass? Would love to see some pics/suggestions!

Looking for some input on how I can be intentional with my aquascape to create create habitat for some of these corals/advice on placement, especially with the Duncans & Hammers. I've had the most success with softies & sps thus far so I want to be strategic about how I do things.

Little update - everything has arrived in terms of gear/supplies & I’ve gotten a little head start (granted, not as much as I’d have liked to) on the new setup. Rocks were the last thing to arrive & I spent the majority of last weekend sanding & painting a cabinet I scored for $10 at a yard sale to use for my Nano. Kept me busy while making a few batches of RODI water.

I was expecting the tank sometime next week, which would’ve given me lots of time to scape my rock this weekend, but it’s supposed to arrive today!! Thankfully I was ahead of the curve with moving my 10g and got everything out of the way & set up last night to make room for the E260.

I kind of wish I would’ve gotten another foundation rock or branch shapes for my scape, but I’ll improvise. I broke up the larger base & got a few rocks glued last night, but was pretty beat and called it night at about 10.

I’m horrible at remembering to take pictures, but will try and be better both for my own enjoyment and to share here. New system will be going where the brown cabinet was. Nano is now on the white stand & already love the cleaner, less-cluttered look and much better viewing height.

Can’t wait to get this new system together & wet!!

Got everything put together and started to fill it up…noticed a few small cracks when I got in the cabinet to wire up all the equipment…waiting to hear from @Red Sea on what the future will hold, but pretty bummed I won’t be starting my cycle this weekend.

With that being said, it will give me some extra time to finish this aquascape without rushing! Always a silver lining :)

Update:
Red Sea is sending out a new tank.

No progress to report on the aquascape - hoping to put some time into it over the next few evenings/this weekend.

I did upgrade my RODI unit with a Smart Buddie booster pump & am really pleased with the results - it cuts my production time by 2 or 2.5x! The auto-flush is nice as well! I made a little project out of it & mounted everything on a block of wood since I don’t have a permanent location to mount them on a wall (parents rules, lol).

Looking forward to getting the ball rolling with this new setup. Unfortunately the hiccups with the tank will probably mess up my plan of leveraging July 4th sales on corals as I am/was planning on cycling without lights for 4 weeks. We’ll see if I can continue to be patient, or maybe I can order and just schedule a delayed shipment/delivery. Hopefully I can still time it where my ammonia cycle is finished and I can at least get a good deal on my clown pair - still deciding what variety I want to get.

Good luck to you. That's got to be very frustrating but at least there was resolution.

We’re live!! New tank arrived Friday. I spent most of Saturday finishing up my aquascape & couldn’t be much happier with the way it turned out! Added to tank Saturday night along with salt, and then put my sand in yesterday afternoon - went with 20 lbs of Fiji Pink & 20 lbs of CaribSea Special Grade to give it a nice mix of texture for my critters without it blowing all over the place. Threw in a couple scoops of AF Life Source Mud & Reef Brite’s Live Rock Enhance. Dosed BW QuickCycl last night along with MB Start XLM. Really excited to watch this evolve into (hopefully) something special!

Something funny I noticed - did a full dose of Ammonia & registered ~2 ppm on an old API test kit that technically expired last month. After that I swapped my Seneye over from my nano tank & it’s been reading 0.02 ppm 😂 There’s just no way lol

Phew! Ok, been a good while since I posted any sort of updates on this system. There have definitely been some bumps in the road, but I can honestly say it's the most success I've had thus far in the hobby.

My first fish were a pair of Picasso Percula clowns from ORA and they've been doing swimmingly (pun intended).
I had some back a with @Dr. Reef and ordered 3 Bangaii Cardinals and a Royal Gramma to add next. The Royal Gramma shipped like a champ the first time, and has become one of my favorite fish to watch interact with others in the tank. Sadly, the Cardinals just did not handle the stress of shipping well. He took good care of me and added 3 Bangaii to my 2nd order, which I had already set up with him, and this time 2/3 made it looking great and are still thriving in my tank today! As part of that shipment I also added a Lawnmower Blenny, an Orange Spotted Blenny, and a Tiger Watchman Goby/Tiger Pistol Shrimp combo. Sadly the Goby and Shrimp didn't survive shipping and I haven't gotten around to ordering more just yet. I did get a Diamond Goby from WWC (who I believe uses a 3rd party wholesaler to ship fish purchased thru them), and he was awesome....until I found him dried up on the floor one day...lesson learned! I have a screen net top kit coming on Friday, and hope to add a few more fish in there once I have that peace of mind that I won't have any escapees. More recently, I added really tiny Mimic Yellow Tang....like the size of a Cheez-it lol, which has been going crazy on any little specs of algae, and has added a pretty cool dynamic to the community in the tank.

I'm getting a few Peppermint Shrimp next week to hopefully eliminate some Aiptasia I've been noticing popping up, mostly around my zoas. I've only seen maybe 5-6 of them (knock on wood) so I'm hoping to nip that in the bud. I'm interested to see how they get along with my Blood Red Fire Shrimp, hopefully he doesn't whack them all before they can mow down the Aiptasia...

Other than that, I've got 2 or 3 Emerald Crabs which I rarely see, but they do poke out at night once in a while. I'm not even sure how many blue leg hermits are in there, probably a dozen if not more. I have some Nassarius that help keep my sand clean, although not as clean as I'd like them to. I've got a boat load of snails - I think mostly Astrea/Cerith, and 3-5 massive Mexican Turbos...one of them is an absolute unit - bigger than a golf ball, and probably the size of a giant scoop of ice cream lol. It's nice that they keep the glass pretty clean, the rocks not so much. And the Turbos are pretty much bulldozers when it comes to my corals/rocks. I can't tell you how many times I've had to reattach my GSP to the back glass just to have it get knocked off again in a few weeks or months. Thankfully I've gotten a lot of Stomatellas that seem to tag along on frags almost every time I get a shipment of coral, and they've multiplied like crazy in the tank, which has been cool to witness as time passes.

I ordered an orange filter kit for my phone camera so I can get some decent pics to share on here and that's supposed to arrive today so I will try to get some nice shots posted. Will write up a little post about coral separately from this one, and hopefully get some good pics of them to share as well :)

Well I put in an order with @Dr. Reef for some fish to add bit more bioload to my system. I've been dosing NeoNitro via dosing pump for almost a month now and it seems like all the coral I've added is really consuming a lot of it...seems like a strange problem to have 😂 I hardly ever run my skimmer, feed daily, and fairly heavily, I dose aminos almost every night...I dump in a slurry of different coral foods at least once, if not twice a week and my Nitrates rarely go above 10 ppm, and my phosphates rarely get over 0.05 🤯 After close to a year, my biological filtration seems to just take care of all of it no problem, and this is the easiest way I've found to keep my nutrients from hitting zero-zero and keep at least a little algae growing for my herbivorous fish to have something to graze on. There are definitely a few spots I wish I could get rid of green algae, but it's not enough to bother the corals or become an eye sore with the exception of 1 spot about 2x2" front and center of my rockwork, so I'm not losing sleep over it. I just wish the corals would grow a little quicker!

For the slurry I mix up a cup with Reef Roids, BRS Reef Chili, Avast Marine's Reef Jerky, Freeze Dried Mysis, AF Growth Boost, Brightwell Reef Blizzard XC, Copepod Powder, Spirulina Powder, Paracoccus Powder, Selcon, Brightwell Coral Inertia, occasionally KZ Pohl's Xtra Special, and broadcast feed it to the tank. The fish go absolutely hogwild and the polyp extension/feeding response from the corals is great.

So, to my original point, I'll be getting some more fish in a couple weeks and I'm pretty stoked for some of my selections:
-Midas Blenny
-Purple or Exquisite Firefish (I have one of each coming and haven't decided which will go in this tank/my nano)
-Pink Spotted Watchman Goby (as well as a Red Banded Pistol Shrimp)...really excited for this symbiosis in the tank 🤪
-Orange Spotted Blenny...he/she may end up in my nano depending how the Lawnmower and Midas get along...
-Banggai Cardinal x3 so I'll have a school of 5 (fingers crossed) I've been trying to get a school of them for a while, but they haven't shipped well and have been DOA in the past.

Current inhabitants:
-Picasso Percula Clownfish pair
-Yellow Mimic Tang
-2 Banggai Cardinals
-Royal Gramma Basslet
-Lawnmower Blenny

CUC:
-Several Nassarius
-Zebra Turbos
-Ceriths
-Nerites
-Astrea
-2 or 3 Emerald Crabs
-Bunch of Blue Leg Hermits
-Blood Red Fire Shrimp
-TONS of Stomatellas that have hitchhiked on frags & multiplied like crazy

Sadly, I've also put in an order to @TopShelfAquatics for some Berghia Nudibranch who will hopefully nip my Aiptasia in the bud before they become a major problem. There are somewhere between half a dozen and a dozen in the tank. One of them is pretty big and has been bothering one of my Aussie Lords. Couldn't even kill it off with a hydrogen peroxide dip 🫠 but the silver lining is that it was a great excuse to order a few more coral to get free shipping 🤪 I'm also looking forward to trying their live phyto! I'm hoping my Acros like it

I finally got a set of filter lenses for my phone so I'll have some pics of the tank to share in the coming days & weeks. For now, enjoy these couple of Acans I ordered coming next week 😍

Nice digs! This is kinda wild the similarities we’ve experienced separately. My first tank was a 20 long. I had for a LONG time, then moved to VA and rather than move 3 times with it (I moved to a different part of PA on my return) I moved it to my Dad’s for a few years. I was surprised he kept it going with pellets and just manually topping fresh; I would come do a water change every… quarter 🤣. My corals actually went nuts and thrived at his house and my damsel live a full life pretty much 10+ years which is crazy (last few in retirement at the old man’s home 😅).

Then I kept reading. I have a 75 gal btw; basically same size tank as 69 gal imo. And I got WAY TOO much from Queen City Coral’s. His stuff is honestly so quality and way bigger than I expect usually. One week was $35 torch and another was bogo torches for 60-70$ total. He often has considerably unique stuff too; and always has his cheap stuff. I’ve also dabbled sps from WWC and TSA.

Anyways sorry to bomb the thread! Just too funny, different life same story. Following along for more updates with the next order!

1 question, when you mix freeze dried mysis does it not float? I’ve only tried it by itself and soaked but no luck.

Haha that’s too funny! I actually started out with a 20 (don’t remember if it was long or regular), and moved with it to West Chester, then back, then all the way to Minnesota lol. My mom also took care of one of my tanks for 3-4 months while I wasn’t able to 😂

Yeah, QCC has great stuff and their prices are lower than I’d expect for the quality/size/selection they offer. I randomly wandered onto his site one day “just to check it out” and unwittingly spent a pretty penny on a bunch of stuff I just couldn’t pass up! Will definitely shop there again! First time ordering from TSA as well - I almost always order from Tidal Gardens & WWC. Although I did find a nice LFS in the Malvern area recently called Main Line Coral Gardens!

Yes- the freeze dried definitely tends to float which is kind of a bummer. I think it would be better for a homemade/DIY frozen food. But I usually add some extra water or amino on top of the concoction at the end, cap it & shake it up really well. Still floats a bit, but once the pumps go back on it’s a flurry and a little extra treat for my fish. I just use a little cup I got a zoa frag in, I must have 50 of them 😂

No apologies necessary, I always appreciate some company on my threads! lol, I would probably post more if I thought anyone was actually reading/following along 🤣😅 but I enjoy logging some milestones anyway

Well I just got some good news - @TopShelfAquatics order shipped today and I'll be "working" from home tomorrow to ensure everything is pampered as soon as FedEx makes the drop. Can't wait to see these few Acans in person - if they look half as good as the pictures, I'm in for a treat!

Also looking forward to getting some Berghia in my tank...I've got a dozen or more Aiptasia for them to chow down on (probably a lot more if I were to truly count them up). Hoping they're worth their weight in....well an Aiptasia-free tank in a few weeks/months....which is as good as gold to me!
