Just got a chalice frag about a week ago and during the day time when my lights are on its not fully puffed up and i can see the points from its skeleton, but at night it gets really puffed up and cant see any skeleton. Does this mean my lights are too strong i have a couple other chalices in the same spot and they all see to be doing good.

Few things we would need to know...

What size tank / dimensions?
What type of lighting are you using?
Where are the chalices located in you tank (bottom 1/3, middle 1/3, top 1/3)?

Sand bed is always a good place to start with chalices and let them get use to your lights. Were you able to see the points in the skeleton when you first got it? Have you been spot feeding it at all or see it eat?

Definitely try to get him eating...i wouldn't doubt he would rebound nicely especially since others are doing well in the same spot. Also check to make sure no other feeder tentacles are bugging him from any other corals.

On very small chalice frags, is there a way to tell if they are very puffy or small? Trying to gauge the signs that my frag is not happy and know when to move him.

I know people like to spot feed their lps and ity helps them to grow quicker and all but, I have tried spot feeding and while its cool many times it can lead into over feeding the tank. that said I just feed my tank now and all my LPS do just fine. As far as chalice and lighting go I keep mine in the shade and they seem to do the best there

Not saying you need to feed large amounts but enough to try to get him healthy...one pellet or piece of mysis on an eye or two should be fine. Check my thread out - This guy eat every other day and had some serious growth! https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/general-lps-discussion/59663-my-chalice-growth-12-2009-a.html
