Chip in tank

Hi all I’ve just purchased a 2nd hand 100gal tank 10mm glass, after filling I noticed a chip in the side is it a write off ??? silicone seems to change under pressure it may have taken a knock at some stage ahh

I think you might be ok, it looks like it is on a heavy glass corner, it looks like you have heavy glass, and the chip does not look that deep, if the tank is full, try putting a good quality super glue on it.

Yeah a lot of water to go south! Is an internal brace an option? Say glass runner up the length of the inside corner to take the load , cheers

The fact you say the silicone changes under pressure makes me think it may already be seperating. I do some risky stuff but would probably give a pass.

Hard to tell from photos.

A scallop chip is fine. Any runner crack types is not fine.

Yeah you’re right, it goes back to normal once the water is off it / full, could result in separation eventually better not risk it might turn it into a half tank for a turtle habitat thanks for your help

If you feel confident you could replace that panel with a new panel and redo the seams, but at that point it's probably not worth doing and instead get another tank. I agree with others. Don't use as is.

Very hard to really see what’s going on with just two pictures. Can you share many more? I am incredibly conservative on these situations and would say dont use the tank. This is your home it’s in and not mine. Feel free to call me or we can do a video call. 404-434-3444.

Hey mate I’m in oz so can’t call, I’m with ya on this aswell I don’t want all that water etc over the house, It’s definitely the panel separation in that section where it’s been knocked or something, I’m thinking of pulling the panel off and having a look.
Any advice on resealing the panel if all looks ok I gather I don’t need to do a full strip down? Thanks for your assistance cheers

I've successfully resealed the front panel of a 4' 120 and its held water for about 15yrs since the repair. Its an old oceanic with a glass top brace, so maybe a bit more DIY friendly than others. I personally wouldnt see any reason to believe that any seal other than the ones on the chipped pane would need to be removed.

YMMV, I am not a professional tank repairman and this is not legal advice.

Ok so I’ve decided to strip the tank down and rebuild the area where I suspected damage seems fine but up top where the support goes there’s a chip be sanded it back but worried it might be an issue (attached photo) as this is where the support goes thinking it may be ok any thoughts cheers

I see this as medium risk and would do a re-seal and can send you easy instructions.

Thanks vetteguy pls send through much appreciated, was also thinking of getting a glassier to cut say 100mm of the top of all the panels while it’s apart as it’s pretty high anyway ?? 600mm to 500mm to avoid any risk ??

You should have done a video call with Joe at Glass Cages when he asked you, for he is an Expert, you could have moved your phone or computer all around the damage, all you need is an internet or cell connection, I use to do video calls all the time when my wife was working in China, perfect video, much better then pictures.
