Got my first saltwater fish! I picked up a young Gold Lightning Maroon Clown Fish and some Nassarius snails! He's been in the tank for a week now and seems pretty happy swimming throughout the whole tank and exploring. I want to add another 2 fish at least then start adding my coral. The fish I have in mind i would love to add to my tank are
  • Yellow Watchmen Goby
  • Purple firefish
  • Green clown Goby
  • Scarlett cleaner shrimp
Obviously I cant fit all of these in my 20G nano but maybe 1 or 2 of these, but do any of you have experience with gold maroon clowns and them being aggressive toward these fish? Also do you think putting other fish in with the clown while its young will decrease the chances of aggression? If for any reason i would need to get rid of any fish my LFS is glad to take them with plenty of space! just trying to get some feed back from people with more experience! thanks guys!

I’ve never had a Maroon clown but I’ve heard they can be super aggressive. I would checkout the compatibility chart at liveaquaria.com to see if they play well with gobies or firefish. It’s a small tank without much space for a smaller fish to get away if the clown goes rogue. I have two regular clownfish that get along with all their tankmates. Good luck!

Pretty Maroons!
Mine seems to be pretty aggressive towards my Male Gold lightning, foxface and my arm but tends to leave everything else alone. Im a big fan the YWG with the goby residing down low it might help in that size tank. I will let others chime in.

Maroon in a 20g, usually will be territorial and hard to add new fish to that, but possibly if young may be ok.

Clown goby, not sps friendly

YWG maybe

Purple firefish, kinda shy and skittish, depends on clown age/maturity

Royal gramma would be a good add, and in a 20g I'd stop about there w/ a maroon, maybe add inverts.

Beautiful fish! I heard some can get up to 6" in length, is that normally just females? How long have you had yours and how big is it?

Maroons are aggressive and can get quite large. For a 20 gallon tank I would not have chosen that fish. My advice is to trade it back in for the other fish on your list.

Thank you I bought mine on October 11th, the female easily tripled in size the male is a little bigger than what he was when I bought them. They were both pretty tiny. Female is probably 1.5 - 2" now. She seems much bigger when my hands in the tank! :D
