I apologize the photos are blurry but he is a very small clown. His left side appears fine but his right side has a red gill that is sticking out slightly. None of his two other tank mates (YWG and larger clown) have this issue and his appetite and behavior are active and good. This is a QT tank under observation only and everything has been fine for a month except we have needed the dose prime daily for elevated ammonia. The tank is nearly cycled but I did miss a prime dose the other day so I’m wondering if this could be inflammation from that? Last night we finally hit 0 ammonia but still have nitrites so I used prime once again. Should I treat for flukes or is this just a defect or ammonia irritation?
I included 1 photo of the left side of his body for comparison. Thanks!

Red gills often a sign of flukes however with it being one can be injury or mucus leaning towards injury
Is fish eating and breathing normal?
If so , keep an eye on it for improvement. If worsening, treat fish in a separate tank using seachem neoplex with air stone added

Thanks for the fast response! Yes eating, active. No breathing issues. He’s the smaller of the pair (less than 1 inch) and hasn’t thrived as much as the other clown. He is submissive towards her so eats less but as long as I show him food away from her, he has a large appetite.

I’ll get some neoplex just in case. If it doesn’t improve in a few days, go ahead and separate and dose?

As mentioned, most diseases and water quality issues would affect both fish a bit more equally. Even with just one fish having a problem first, both gills would be affected.

I suspect that this was an injury from the other clown. If they weren’t paired up before you got them, they may be squabbling.

They weren’t paired so it makes sense. I’ll watch him and hope for the best, thank you!
