Colony or frag?

I would like to know what defines a frag from a colony? I see people selling what I would consider to be frag and they are calling them a colony.

I would have to say it depends on how slow the coral grows. something like a green slimer would need to be pretty big(baseball to cantelope) to be a colony...but for a purple monster it could be pretty tiny(golfball) and still be a colony.

What type of coral are we talking?

# of polyps, and coral variety.

I was thinking in general because you can sell 3 polyps if you have five lets say or because you could cut 1 inch off a coral because you have 2 inchs where is the line. I'm not looking to frag any thing just curious thanks.

Colonies are usually very large with lots of polyps or heads and usually on a rock (and often wild)...frags are when people break off pieces from the colonies and replant them on plugs or other small pieces of rock to sell, trade or replant in various places in their tanks. Usually the cost per polyp or head is less when it is on a large colony but the total cost is more. A lot of people don't want to spend say $150 on one large colony of the same coral (unless maybe you are fragging and reselling) and are willing to pay more per polyp/head to get a larger variety of corals at a lower cost.
