commod0re's UNS R90 Build

Well we made it to November and the tank is still there. Did a 25 gallon water change and siphoned some of the sand and all the rocks and actually, despite the color, it seems a lot of the nuisance algae has died. I never did that second dose of flux either lol

Seems like there’s still diatoms and maybe a bit of cyano as well but I siphoned out as much of that as I could. The clean up crew that’s still in there looks OK

Fallow period is definitely over, at long last, so any day now we’ll move the wrasse into the tank…. i’m just nervous since she’s been doing so well in the little tank. There’s a huge amount of amphipods built up in the big tank for her to snack on though which is great. I still need to clean up the new quarantine tank as well but I will take care of that soon…

How high is your fleece roller sensor sitting above water level? I installed my set yesterday and with my running sump level about 9” the sensor is still about 2” off top of water. I would not want the front chamber to fluctuate that much as it will inevitably mess with my ATO. Did you have to do anything special?

It won’t raise the water level of the whole chamber that far, just inside the fleece roller itself, so the total volume of fluctuation is actually quite small

Ah, now that I think about it you’re absolutely correct. I was looking at it backwards. Sometimes it’s better to air out questions to others to see the whole picture 😅 I’m in the process of moving over coral and breaking down my other tank so I got a lot going on inside my head atm 🫠

I did have another one for ya. I was looking at my roller chamber and it seems the water doesn’t make it to the front roller really at all. I can’t tell if it’s just all pouring through the 1st roller closest to the spout or it’s draining around the tray they are sitting on. Would love to know how yours is.

The new fleece rollers have been working well. I can’t think of anything else really to say this week so here are a couple of pictures of me target feeding the wrasse some thawed cyclops

Still considering some names for her. Two current front runners are Wrasseberry and Tia Dalma
+1 for Wrasseberry. That’s so cute!

How do you have them oriented? I played with mine for a long time when I was getting them set up and discovered two things that could be related to this:

1. The fit between the sock holder and the sock chamber is fairly loose and water easily leaks around the sides bypassing the fleece rollers completely. Not a ton but some. I used a 3D printer to print pieces to both fill the gaps and also make the plate more rigid

2. When the first roller is still clean most of the water will drain through it and not much will make it to the second/front roller. Once that roller gets dirty more water will flow over it and into the second roller. Based on that I put the roller with the sensor in the front slot, so that it only rolls when both are finally dirty

I have them currently positioned with the fill port towards the skimmer compartment, and I also placed the sensor in the front. Sounds like I need to get a 3d printer sooner than later to make misc things ha. Maybe you could show me what you went with so I can copy? Or if you don’t mind printing more I’d gladly pay
