I have done a fair out of reading on kalk. But I can’t find the exact thread I’m looking for where @Randy Holmes-Farley talks about it interaction on CO2 and ph.

But basically I was dosing my kalk over a ~14 period, my nighttime ph was getting down to about 8.03. 3 days ago I adjusted my dosing and I’m now dosing almost the same amount but over a 9 hour window. Now my nighttime ph is getting to 8.11.

I understand why dosing more over a smaller time is keeping my ph higher. But now I am having some minor issues (reduced PE, dry/pale spots on acros) do you think this is related to my change in dosing? The kalk causing mini ph spikes? Providing a sudden amount of carbonate or bicarbonate that is effecting coral? Or am I being paranoid?

Thanks @Randy Holmes-Farley , also if you have time to link some articles on the science of it. Does coral use carbonate or bicarbonate?

Bicarbonate conversions happens as fast as it mixes in. It does not take any extra time to chemically react.

Many people dose kalk just at night and it is no concern or any pH worry.

Adding it all in 20 seconds will cause a pH spike of about 0.6 pH units per 1.4 dKH of alk added that way. Spread out over hours and the rise is far smaller as the tank pulls in CO2.
