Yes, exactly, both. They play important roles in enzymatic and other biochemical processes and a number of them is essential to all organisms.

Since trace elements help to support continued good growth of corals, coralline algae and other organisms they help in reduction of phosphate and available nitrogen compounds.

The corals in the photograph look very good, so there is no obvious deficiency in trace elements, but with time a deficit may develop.
