I'm wondering if this is a mushroom or a possibly a maxis mini anemone. I bought it as a very small "mushroom" but it has blown up and split multiple times

That's a mushroom that has split into new mushrooms. It does kind of look like a mini-maxi men but these a commonly called "frilly mushrooms" and some other names I can't recall atm.

Looks to me like a hairy mushroom, a Rhodactis species.
Definitely not a mini maxi as I find these don’t split unless stressed. They instead breed and share very similar characteristics with Rock Flower Anemones.
