How can I get rid of hitchhikers on coral rubble that have coralline algae. I want to seed my tank without introducing any unwelcome nasties. I already bought a small piece and there was like a white worm in the bag and I dipped the rubble in fresh water and a small 1/2 " brittle star came off. Out of curiosity, I looked up what happen when you fresh water dip coralline algae and everywhere I looked said that killed it. No advice on what would work.

So, what do I do to keep out the nasties?????

I guess before we go into how you can safely introduce coraline algae into your tank - I think you should reflect on why you want to seed coraline algae...
Most reefers have to spend hours of time scraping off this stuff once it takes off. Yes coraline algae has various colors that are very vibrant , but corals can be way more vibrant.

Another thing to note is the amount of trace elements coraline algae sucks up. I think others will touch base on this and provide suggestions on how to introduce it in a safe manner.

I figure my only other choice was to get artificially colored dry rock (which is expensive). Also, I figure that coralline algae will eventually be introduced in the tank...It's just an inevitability. My saving grace is that, with a nano aquarium, I won't spend hours scraping it off :)
