And still no word on having to save the packaging to send it back to Neptune for "routine servicing."

How often does it need to be sent in?

How long does it take?

How much does it cost?

(For those wondering: the Trident Introduction videos, available in apex fusion, say to keep the box for this)

I really hope they explain this during the announcement.

-----------

EDIT: He recommends every 18-24 months. The replacement parts will also be sold separately for those who want to DIY (he recommends sending it in, though)

Sending it in: 150-200$

DIY: under 100$

More info on this will come in couple months.

OPINION: It would be nice to have gotten a firm answer on this. Its bad enough its going to cost that much more, but expecting people to buy a product without fully disclosing the long-term investment... really puts a bad taste in my mouth. And kind of kills my excitement for this :/

He just said after 18 to 24 months recommended service time but there will be a kit to try an do it yourself for under 100 dollars or to send it in for around 150 or so with a possible hot-swap type deal... They will get more into it after a couple of months with details.

So all that snarky talk about having to replace PH probes in the competition, etc, and oh hey by the way you require some major servicing every year and a bit, on top of the ongoing reagent cost. Gee I wonder why that little tidbit was saved for the last moment before retail release.

I wonder if BRS will put it through months and months of testing to ensure it's ready as Neptune NSI says it is? They still haven't started selling the GHL Kh director, even though they've been testing it flawlessly for months and months.

Due to the politics of the hobby I'm sure that they will sell it right away though. Neptune doesn't "donate" them tons of equipment for nothing after all.

Excited it will finally be out though! Let the craziness end and a different craziness begin!

With reagent and if you add the maintenance cost it’s about $30 a month to run the Trident.

If by "a bit high" you mean "totally ridiculous" I agree lol :p

I REALLY want to nab one of these ASAP, but this definitely puts a huge dent in my excitement. :/
Kinda killed my excitement also.

Hopefully the DIY maintenance option is not too difficult.
I hope it’s not also. He did say he really recommends people don’t do it on their own though.

Service is 18 or 24 months I thought. Not that big of a deal.

Let me put the service into perspective for you. I'm an active scuba diver (hopefully others here would agree on this point) and I send in my equipment every other year for service and it runs me about 180 dollars give or take. This is my BC and regs. This is my life support so while I already shelled out a lot of money for my gear I want to know it is working fully every time I use it. This is even if I don't do many dives it still goes in.

Trident is no different. You are testing something in your tank. If you choose to do an action based on a reading then you should make sure it is always working and measuring and doing what it does correctly. Service is a piece of mind. Not a money grab by the vendor.

And I'm not against the product, it's about time and every tank that can benefit from this, so much better for the hobby (well I guess not for the coral sellers ;) ). That said, the overall discourse with this release has been very disappointing, it has flaws just like every one of the competition does. It needs things either replaced / "serviced" after set use intervals, just like the competition.

Going to be a gong show with anyone not in the US for this, that can't service it themselves.

Not sure what the lads name is that looks like Seth Rogen (sp?) but he is killing me in the video. Love his personality and interaction with Terrance :)
