i bought a clam yesterday at a convention. I want planing to but the guy was selling the for super cheap because he had a long drive home. I think that it is a crocea from what I’ve seen. It has a brownish body with blue specks. It was a lot more colorful in the display but it is slowly coloring up. I’ve nodiced that it is way more blue when looking straight at it can I lay in on its side? Thoughts?

Clams always look better looking straight down at them.. you don’t want to lay them on their side but if you rotate it 180 deg so it’s NOT parallel to tank you will be able to see mantle color better.

Shell looks crocea, but still hard to tell. Some of the cultured clams can be a hybrid. I hope it does well for you. It looks rather small. Good luck!

Mantle look maxima, but the scutes look crocea. Maybe needs to get bigger for me to tell on the scutes. Hope it comes out for you soon.

@Fshloover try to get some pics in a few days of the incurrent siphon as the clam opens more and acclimates. Baby clams can be difficult to ID as both maximas and crocea can have similar scutes, even small derasa can have some. Also, the opening on the bottom of the clam can be an identifier as well but I would not bother the clam at this time.

Inhalent siphon looks to be a maxima. Simple without the extra small frills that a crocea has. Interesting clam you have there. Hope it colors up and does well. Those babies have a tough time. Just make sure to not move it much. Add plankton to water to help feed it too. Good luck!
