Cyano/Dino outbreak

I’ve got some microscope pictures! I have a Cyanobacteria outbreak, it’s starting to grow over some corals. I used chemiclean 2 weeks ago, did the 20% water change after and have continued with my weekly 10% maintenance changes. The cyano came back way worse, I’ve also been dosing vibrant. I see some possible Dinoflagellates under the microscope but this is mostly a cyano problem. We’re moving 20 minutes down the road in a month so we will have the opportunity to do something drastic, any wisdom in the matter is greatly appreciated.

To me that is certainly cyano and I wish you luck my friend! I’ve been fighting this stuff for about 2 years now in my nano and no fish that I have found to eat it is small enough for my tank. (Magnificent Foxface and Ctenochaetus tangs) although, I will say my two magnificents may have just been an exception. I say two because I owned one in the past and he ate it quite happily and my 2 year old one also eats it. My Ctenochaetus binotatus just grinds down the smaller bits that the Foxface chews but he’s better with GHA and Film algae.

It is common to have cyano and certain dinos together. Often with Chemiclean the cyano will then die and the dinos will take over.

At that level of magnification, I cannot make out which dino you have there. If pressed to guess, I would say BOTH large cell and small cell amphidinium. Can you get an image -- or better yet a video -- at 400X plus phone zoom?

I would pass on the Vibrant as it is suppressing other surface competitors. Same with the Chemiclean.

As to PO4, you do want to get that down. Given how high the level is and the size of the system, I would study up on the use of Lanthanum chloride products, but take them down slowly. Do not dose directly to the display itself as the precipitates can harm the fish.

Since you are moving, rip clean the rocks and filter clean the sand and basically start over but try and retain your bio diversity and microfauna that is currently in the tank as much as possible. it will also give you a chance to start fresh with your water parameters in check. Your numbers are way out of balance.

Use chemiclean then UV to combat Dino’s after . Start now rather than later

Nice collection. I think you have large cell Amphidinium and some coolia together with cyano.
deal with Dinos first. Silicates dosing works. UV don’t really affect them.
