Cyno???

So just did my water change yesterday come home from work today to find this all over the sand... what could cause this

Probably not Cyano. Could be diatoms or well...we won't go there yet. What are your water parameters? How old is your tank?

Phosfates are low salinity is 1.024 ph is right at 8.1 - 8.2 nitrates seems fine and nitrites seemed fine... ammonia is . Could be what.????dinos??? I just did a water change yesturday and sand was clean. I have good flow in the tank at least I thought so

How old is the tank? Looks like diatoms which aren’t a big deal if so.

If it’s a new set up probably just diatoms. If your PO4 NO3 “low” and “fine” = 0 you could be looking at Dino. I wouldn’t jump to that though until there is further evidence or confirmed with a microscope.

I’m not a fan of the color test kits but look like both are 0. Dino’s like a 0 nutrient environment. After your water change it could have triggered them. But again, can not confirm that without further testing or microscope. You might increase your feeding to get your nutrients a little higher or skip a WC and see if the brown retreats. If diatoms they will run their course.

I started to over feed today. Is there anything else I can do? I wont have access to a microscope until Tuesday next week

You can try a turkey baster. Dinos are like snot and diatoms are almost microscopic sand and tend to blow away like such.

A silica test can be useful to run on your rodi on occasion, you can have 0tds and still have enough silica pass through.

If its diatoms as you add livestock they will outcompete the diatoms for nutrients even if there is silica present ime.

So went to blow away with Turkey baster and it all clumped up. So it looks like dinos. Which I hardly know anything about

Don’t panic yet but be prepared. Look at this link (start at the beginning)to familiarize yourself with Dino’s, whether it’s confirmed It’s that or not (the scope will eliminate any doubt)
