Hi everyone,
Is my lobo dying? 😢 I’ve noticed a hole in my lobo that’s been getting bigger over the past few weeks, and a few new ones have started developing too. Its tissue is also receding.

Water parameters should be fine since my other lobo has been doing well the whole time. This one used to extend small polyps around midnight, but it doesn’t anymore, and it doesn’t react to food either (whereas my other lobo extends its polyps whenever there’s food or at night).

The tissue where the large hole is used to be a different color (fluorescent green) when I bought it in July (see the last picture).

Thank you in advance.

"Water parameters should be fine" is a non starter my friend. I mean no disrespect, but water parameters are one key component, and to help we'd like to know what the current water looks like.

As an example from me: I just got an orange scoly, and a bleeding apple, they were from different vendors, one is fantastic, the other is dead, and my water 35 salinity, 26 nitrates, .3 phospahtes 9 dKH.

So we just need more info to try and help.

Thanks for your help Bryan. Here are my parameters for the last few months:
    • Nitrate: 0.5 - 1 ppm
    • Phosphate: 0.03–0.1 (only hit 0.15 and 0.2 briefly). I have roller mat, skimmer and refugium.
    • Calcium: 450–540
    • Magnesium: 1350–1500
    • kH: 7.1–10 (normally > 8 and <10 just went down to 7.1 for one week recently)
    • Salinity: 36
    • Ph: 8.3 but only tested a few times

So nutrients are basically zero.

reasonable nitrate 5-20, phosphate .06-.3.

These are things that corals need to survive and thrive.

Doesn't 100% speak to your lobo issue, but it is likely. You need more nutrients in your system.

It looks like you have quite a bit of variation in your parameters, mainly in the big three dkh, ca, and mag. Could be that the lobo isn’t responding well to the swings in values. Pick a value and try to stay on it, it may not be the cause but better stability will hopefully give it a less stressful environment to heal.
