Bought some Turbo snails to replenish my clean up crew, put 3 in my tank after drip acclimating for approximately 1-1/2 hours. Placed them directly on the sand bed where they haven't moved since, one is clearly dead having been sucked out by my fire shrimp, the other two haven't budged. Why would turbo snails die so quickly ???

Are there any specific parameters that Turbo snails like ??? I'm thinking these were the Mexican variety and not the zebra striped ones. I should add the other 7 went into my 120 and they seem to be fine. My water paremeters as of 11/11 were 8.0 alk, 1300 mag, 400 ca, .024, zero nitrates and undetectable phosphates.

Fish include yellow tang, mandarin, six line wrasse, and a fire shrimp.

Should ask for a refund from LFS ???

most invert are temp sensitive so if you drip too long and the temp will drop.( you will end up shocking them)
Next time try the bag floating for 15 min and then a cup of water every 15min. I did this for an hour and have no issue.
Or you might just have a bad batch.

You sure the other two are dead? I've had snails (not turbo but astreas and nerites) not move for like a day after I put them in.

I did float the bag too, for about 15 minutes or so and then dumped the water into plastic containers. I know one of the three has an empty shell with its "lid" laying next to it. A second is overturned, twice now I gently prodded it back upright. Is it true that cynobacteria will kill Turbo snails if they eat it ?? There isn't any cyno in this tank where I had a couple snails die, but my other 120 I siphon out about 5 gallons every third day or so to get the cyno off the sandbed and off the top of some extremely irregularly shaped Takota (sp?) live rock I have. I don't want the turbos to eat the stuff and then croak.

A smell...really ??? I've had a bunch of turbos die in my 120 over the last year or so, and I can't recall ever smelling anything out of the ordinary. I just figured they were eating cyno which seems to be a recurring issue. My temp in the tank with the recently deceased turbos is 78, my 120 had a 4' frag tank tied into it where the MH lamps would spike the temp up to 82 - I altered the scheduling so the MH in either tank would not be on at the same time....I'll look into lowering the temps to 76 if I can.

What about Alk, Ca, and Mag....are their any numbers that are too high or low for snails and crabs ?

Really high mg. can slow them down and sometimes kill them, but your params look ok. Could have just been a bad couple of snails.

I am also interested in knowing if cyno kills them, I've had several die in a matter of a few months, also battling cyno.

I know this is an old thread but it's my first post on R2R! Time for some thread resuscitation!!

I just bought three turbo's to clean up my cyano problem. In the last two weeks they have been like live roombas! The tank is almost spotless and the snails are still going strong. I've heard cyano is toxic but have also heard it's not. It might be more of an issue if it covers corals and blocks the light.

At least, with my snails, so far, so good.

Cu poisoning is the only thing I can think of, although I know this thread is old. Did the tank have corals in it? If so this would discredit the copper poisoning. Cyano does not kill turbos.
