Yesterday I spot fed it the tiny bits of mysis that get everywhere when you thaw out the cube, all my filter feeders seem to like that. I'm ordering new life spectrum's reef cell, which was recommended to me by my friend's sister who works at a marine lab in Miami. Also getting brine shrimp and I might set up a culture eventually, she recommended that as well. We'll see how it turns out.

Back in the day I had a 90g I set up to run just non photo corals. I had poor luck with things like sea fans and other "soft" corals. The "lps" corals like dendro, sun, rhizos did very well for me as they eat larger items. I was reading a paper on sea fans not that long ago that talked about what they eat it seems a lot need live rotifers and very small pelagic copepods. Back when I tried this we didnt have a lot of the micro foods or info we do now. Wishing you the best luck so I can live vicariously through your experience.

Moved the sea fan, and moved the lepto and chalice off that rock because I don't want the sea fan to get stung. I had to frag the fan sea fan because parts of it were above the water. Also set up a quarantine tank and it's first task will be to hold the tbs rock coming in tomorrow! I've seen people complain about qt tanks and try to come up with excuses to not set one up, they are sooooo easy to set up and I spent $37 on the tank and equipment, bought brand new from petco.

The tbs rock is here and it is amazing!!!! I asked for "a ton of hitchiker bivalves" and they absolutely delivered! I think I'm going to have to set up a phytoplanktin culture and dose daily to provide for these guys. I'll post more pics later, I added phytoplanktin to the holding tank so it's very green right now. There's at least two porcelain crabs as well, one is about 2 inches, the other is smaller than my pinky nail. I'll try to get pics of them but they have gone into hiding. I'm starting to see cup corals opening up too.

Looking at the heater in the background, temps on the ocean farm are 72F. Appreciated working with you and best wishes with your tank.

Went ahead and added this guy to the tank, not its permanent spot. Very interesting look, still not sure on an ID. I believe it's from the hypnea genus, so I'll do the honors of making a stupid hobby name, this is prickly pink hypnea.

It’s blue hypnea. The paler bits are dead/rotting (they’ll melt/detach and float away on their own), but if even a tiny bit of it is alive (it looks like it is at the base) it’ll attach and regrow. It’ll be a thick mat if it’s getting a lot of light, and loose and fluffy if it isn’t. It grows *fast* with enough nutrients so you will need to export it to keep from zeroing out your tank. Enter the problem: little bits of hypnea will tear off and float away to start a new clump elsewhere in your tank, so be ready with a net or something. When I wasn’t able to control it and located little colonies elsewhere in my tank, I’d blast it with a few mls of boiling water from a syringe and they’d die off.

Enjoy! I love blue hypnea. I didn’t add it to my new tank only because I am already limited on how much time I can spend in it and didn’t want to add hypnea management on top.

When a coral like this gets stung, does it kill off the whole thing or just the area that gets bit?

Which coral? The Seafan or the Chalice/Lepto?

Tank has hit a bit of rough spot. That whole clump of hypnea turned white and broke apart. It spiked my nitrate and phosphate and caused a second ugly stage. Water change is still not done mixing :(

Most corals survive getting stung and only the polyp/mouth/head that got zapped gets injured and sometimes dies - depending on the severity of the sting. I assume a Seafan would be similar but might lose a branch above the sting at the most assuming no infection sets in.

Since this photo it has not been doing great, ALL of the coral aren't doing great :( My calcium is low and nutrients are way higher than normal but my hands are tied until my wc is done mixing.
So, here's some shots from the live rock holding tank that I still haven't added to the main tank.

This big guy wad spawning earlier today, dont have an ID for him either, can't imagine I'll get one either with all of the growth on top of his shell, makes me wonder how old this guy is.

Here is the turkey wing, Arca zebra again. Very hard to take pics of him open, he closes at the SLIGHTEST disturbance.

Beautiful cluster of cup coral, best color ive ever seen on these that orange is going to look great under reef light.

Chalice has really colored up, also you can see some of the stupid dinos all over my sand and some of the rocks.

I'm waiting to see if they'll spread, so far it seems like they wont. They came when that ENTIRE clump of hypnea completely dissolved which made my tank pretty unstable and I think that was the cause. I'm hoping that the ocean live rock can do something for stability (I added two peices over the weekend). Hopefully they'll go away!

Here's a good update!
I made two more things on the laithe
The chalice is made of eastern red cedar and the other peice will be turned into a lamp, no clue what kind of wood it is. Both of these came from dead fall I cut outside. :) You can also see Benson begging for food in the background, I'll feed him after this update lol

Question for yall: Is hydrogen peroxide dosing a good idea to treat dinos? It's been growing relentlessly on the sea fan and the sea fan frags. I clean it off them every day and it comes back the next day. I've done dips on the frags outside the tank and still the dinos came back the next day.

Here's a pic of the dinos in question, also wondering if that's green cyano in the back. It has also covered the feather dusters tubes :(
