One other thing could be something nipping at it. I had a Valentini Puffer I witnessed ripping arms off a Duncan which is now growing back. Most people have no issues with them but I returned mine to the lfs for credit. It’s possible he nipped at my Euphyllia as well.

I have an emerald crab, but it has been pretty good.

Would it detach completely like this if something were nipping at it?

It could if it were unhappy about something. I actually had polyp bailout on a torch. The head was literally floating around on the sand bed. My hammer just simply deteriorated inside the skeleton and shriveled up to nothing.

Do you have a sump to place your Crab temporarily? They’ve been known to nip at corals as they get bigger. Also, he could be a model citizen during the day and munch on coral when the lights go out.

No I don’t, this is a aio tank.

Did your torch ever recover? I am waiting for it to detach and then put in a Betta cup with holes in it.

Mine “disappeared” before I figured out what to do with it. I tried gluing it back to the frag plug but I couldn’t figure out where the mouth was. I’m stupid for doing this but I placed it in a zero flow crevice to see if it would take hold on its own. I monitored it for hours and it stayed put but it was gone the next morning.

I just had my octospawn recently drop all its heads from the skeleton and I've had it in my tank in the same spot for a year. Can't figure out what caused it other than maybe a powerhead g ot pushed more in its direction causing a little more flow on it. I did put the heads in cups with a piece of flat rock on the bottom. I read they can grow a skeleton back. It's been almost 2 weeks and the heads still look happy.

Thanks for sharing! I hope mine can recover. I am putting it in a plastic container just so it doesn’t blow away

In my experience, Too much flow, tissue damage, lack of feeding and more water movement and lighting combined.
Butterflies in particular will nip at them also causing suspended green tissue

Actually I am not putting it in a container. I thought it was completely detached, but it’s still hanging onto the skeleton. So I tried to reduce flow by putting a piece of plastic around it. [emoji1695]

Update: 3 of my 4 heads detached. I thought one had been eaten or obliterated by a power head, but I found it today wen one of my frags fell over. All 3 are still alive and in a specimen cup. The 2 I had before all have good extension and everything. The one i found today is a little bleached from being under a frag, but hopefully it comes back.

I have had separation due to high water flow and they never regenerate even after trying to place them in crevice r glue them. Hope you have better success

I had this happen once "polyp bail out " not sure what caused it. I put the polyps in a cup with some rubble and they looked fine for over a month but never recovered and ended up dying.

Mine have been doing good for almost two months now. Hoping they recover.

It would be very Interesting to see them grow skeletons again [emoji1695]

Sad day. My detached hammers slowly have been dying off, not because they aren’t happy, but because they get knocked out of their containers. Yesterday my last remaining polyp disappeared because the rubber band holding its container steady broke. It survived 4 months and every day had great extension. I was hoping it would recover.

I had that same problem. I lost a huge Octo head cuz it came out of its container and fell in a rock flower nem. That killed both of them. With the remaining head I have left I conjured up a net top. This works awesome!

I know this is an old thread, but how did the container trick work out? Did you save it? I had a grape frogspawn healthy for like 6 months, then a piece of chaeto floated over it and I didn't notice until a week or so after and found it detached. I guess it didn't like the shade. And now I know that low light can cause it. I have it in a cup on a disc.
