I will say I love my Hydros Collective, but I do agree - sometimes the information is difficult to find and sometimes I have to check multiple pages on the site for the information I need on 1 sensor or controller. I actually have the 3 pages I reference most frequently bookmarked for easier access.
I was not exaggerating:
3 or so years back, I decided to get back into SPS. I was tired of developing my own controller hardware and software and decided to buy off the shelf.
I looked first at Neptune. I read a lot about durability issues and that gave me pause -- as did the PE ownership, Mobius complaints, my dislike of the Radion's (owned then) and the interface and general direction of the parent gave me further pause. I was further turned off by the form factor. No single device shares the same footprint and everything is some silly shape that serves no purpose other than to be "arty" or "different".
I looked at GHL Profilux. I read complaints about the software -- but was able to download GCC and see for myself. Clunky tabbed interface, but functional. The price was was a turnoff -- as was a conversation that I had with them years before when we hosted MACNA.
So I went and looked at Hydros. Page after page of jumbled marketing. The product names made no sense and the product pages were a mess. I couldn't figure out what I needed or how it fit together. I couldn't find specs, or a software interface to demo, let alone screenshots or anything about programming, logic or capability. Just happy go lucky platitudes and pretty pictures. I started to dig into knowledge articles and their forum. I gave up -- nobody should have to work that hard to get the basic product information needed to make an informed decision.
I went back and purchased the GHL products because I could see the software and actual relevant information about each product, how it worked and what was needed.
In what reasonable world does one offer so many overlapping and oddly named products without having a clear product matrix and spec and sales sheets?
Blennies and Minnows and Soles. Launches and Mavens and IVs. Control Xthis and XPthat, Drive ports and Sense ports. Products with the same prefix but followed by -s or -something or XD. There is no convention, clear hierarchy or meaning and no one place that all of this is listed, let alone in a comparable form.
It is patently ridiculous. As I said, it honestly feels like marketing and design by a committee of six year olds and if there is an adult in the room, they are afraid to speak up.
I don't care one way or the other. I am not a customer and have no desire to become one -- but some things just boggle the mind.
