I’ve read through the numerous large dino threads, and have started to take the most commonly recommended steps. But I’m feeling a bit defeated in my battle. Can people who have WON the battle against dinos share their stories, to give me some hope.

Here’s what I’m dealing with, pretty sure amphidinium.

I had amphidinium as well as at least one other type. I dosed no3 and po4 to keep them about .008 po4 and 10 no3. That along with weekly manual removal kept them in check and reduced numbers significantly. I ended up transferring to a smaller tank and replaced the sand bed in the process. It's been a week or so and no sign of them so far. A bit early to say for sure but it seems to be over.

Increasing nutrients and blowing off corals daily helped, but the battle just dragged on for weeks, so I decided to go the UV sterilizer route, the results were AMAZING and cleared it up within 48 hours. I wish I had bought it sooner, plus my glass and sand stays cleaner than it used to. The threads mention UV, but I would emphasize that if UV is something you can afford its something you should seriously consider to just end the battle already :)

Hope you win this battle!

Amphidinium clings to the sand so UV wont help with that particular type. I considered getting a UV when I found other types of dinos in my samples but eneded up clearing up before I did.

I did try uv also (jebao 55w), didn’t help much for amphidinium. I have maintained Po4 .08 and No3 around 5 for about 3 months. I’ve been siphoning dinos, along with a good amount of sand. Tried vibrant, but think it might be inhibiting some dino competitors.... I’m now trying out silica dosing.

I also did the vibrant, not sure if it helped. I bought some silica and was about to start that before it cleared up. What size tank? You might consider replacing the sand bed. Or just removing, rinsing and drying it before putting it back.

I blew the dinos off my sand bed daily, getting them into the water column might have helped them be killed by the UV. Also, I collected the dinos by hanging a filter sock in a high flow area of the display tank during and after I blew them off everything. The fuzzy sock gives the dinos something they really liked to stick to. I would point my power-head towards the filter sock and then remove it in a few hours or the next morning.

Removed sand bed, added uv sterilizer, increased No3 to 5ppm and PO4 to .1ppm. 3 day blackout. Dino's gone and haven't seen them since. My tank started with dry sand and dry ceramic rock. Also added pods and dose phytoplankton. Dino's are beatable!

I’ve been slowly removing my sand, but trying to avoid complete removal for my diamond goby and melanurus wrasse. How long after raising nutrients did you see improvement? Was all it took is the 3 day blackout? I’ve heard mixed results with amphidinium and blackouts. But i’m willing to try just about anything.

Another vote for increasing nitrates and phosphates. This too worked for me over UV sterilizer, Vibrant, Fauna Marin Dino X, and H202 dosing. I did all of the above and it wasn't until I increased nitrates and phosphates it knocked it back, probably because I I started to get hair algae which probably out competed it IMHO

How long after you raised your nitrates and phosphates did it take you to get rid of them? What did you raise your levels to for nitrates and phosphate?

I used NeoNitro and NeoPhos from Brightwell, but once you dose your po4 back up you will go through a period where the tank is consuming a crazy amount of po4. The NeoPhos was getting expensive so I purchased some monosodium phosphate which is way way cheaper. Basically a lifetime supply for $17, so I would recommend skipping the Brightwell stuff.

I raised phosphates to probably around 1 and nitrates to about 50 using Seachem products for that purpose. It was higher than I really wanted but it definitely worked.

How long did you leave it raised? How long until you saw results?

I left it raised a couple weeks but I started to get hair algae so then I started lowering with water changes but not too much to keep somewhat higher levels of nutrients

Thanks. I’m around 15 NO3 and 0.17 PO4 and things are looking like they are getting better after a few days.

Getting more green on the glass do hoping that’s a good sign

Have you considered dosing silicates to increase the Diatom population in order to out compete the Dino's? This is how I beat them.

I’ve got some silica on the way actually. Was gonna go that route in the event this doesn’t work. Ultimately I needed to get my phosphate up and better balanced with my nitrates any way. Just gonna give this some time and if it doesn’t improve I’ll dose silica.

I had a really bad dino outbreak when I first setup my latest tank. I dosed Vibrant and did a 3 day blackout, along with running UV. Killed it pretty quickly and never came back.
