Divorce rates in this hobby

So I've been reading alot of topics pretty much since I got in this forum
And what's the deal with DIVORCE and this hobby like from what I've read once you got the dream tank your divorced and everyone wants to buy your gear cheap

It’s not a trend here, it happens on every hobby board. Guns, RC, boat, Auto... etc.. people overspend on “hobbies”. Our society is well known to go to far into debit so we can keep up with the Jones’.

Also don’t believe everything you read. People tend to tell sob stories to get sympathy so they can sell items.

Who would you buy from:

1. My spouse left me and took the kids and now I can no longer afford my tank and gear. Desperately need money for lawyer fees to help get my kids back. please buy my gear and help me out.

2. This hobby takes more effort than I thought it would. Selling everything.

Ever see the people begging for money on the street corner and they are trying to get money to bury a child? Yea.. there are rotten people in this world and they feed off the good in others.

It’s about balance. I personally spend time on reefing AS A hobby - in my spare time or when it needs me.

My wife recognizes that this hobby bring me joy and have talked me out of quitting several times because she knows I will be miserable if I do.

I aim to strike a balance and I slow down when you find myself going too fast.

What sense of humor? :oops: There is no room for humor in this very serious and austere "hobby".
While we are doing this stuff we are also curing cancer, world hunger and male pattern baldness. :p

Marriage is way more complicated then a reef tank! Just saying.

I haven't found that yet but I hear that after you have been married for 50 years, problems could start. :(

amongst these big issues, I think male pattern baldness is the most important. I would consider that as another contributor to divorce. The combo of reefing addiction and baldness is enough to push it over the edge :).

lol you should check out a certain toxic sludge of a watch forum.. they would trade anything and everything near and dear to them for a 'hot' piece of metal. Then they all pat each other on the back for it....

I started my tank in 1997, and got married in 2001. My wife knew what she was getting into. So no surprises here. She mostly supports my hobbies, but won’t let me forget how expensive Corvettes and reef tanks are, especially if she wants to buy something expensive. It’s all about give and take. We live within our means and don’t go into debt, so it works out well.

Well I am 50, been married 25+ years been together 34 years ( yes high school sweethearts). And I have had a tank of some kind for 40+ years. My dream tank came in 2010. Still married.
I think it's just a product of our society. My wife and I are not perfect but we communicate and respect each other.
And I don't tell her how much I really spend on the tank...sad but true!

Don't believe the rumors Paul, the problems start after 52 years, not 50.

At first my wife didn't get it and saw how much money I was spending on equip, fish, coral, etc. And wasn't on board all the way. Then the Corals started to grow out and how much I enjoy the hobby and she's really enjoying the tank. I space out my coral buys and let her get the things she wants, and it works out great lol.

I just let my gf know that a divorce is imminent. She asked if that meant we could get married soon. Thanks for the bad advice.

I let my mrs choose the coral. It helps to involve them in some shape or form.
