I am certain that this will never happen to you again.

Well I had a salinity issue got that corrected and just kept having problems... I tested and tested with nothing out of whack... I was doing big water changes when it started and running tons of carbon with no help... Then I decided to check in my water storage jugs and found this nice corroded copper thing!!!! My signature nem was the first to go so it makes sense.... Literally

I know this sounds silly but that's not the culprit. Copper pennies were mostly wheat back. They changed to alloys when they went to the Lincoln memorial I believe. Gotta check the books but I am almost certain about that

1972 iirc... I think it's more zinc than copper... What ever it is the penny was corroded pretty well... I'll see if it is still laying on my table when I get home.. I read something about the years it switched from pure copper to zinc with a copper coating but I can't remember I went into panic mode...:(

Well good news... Spent all day Saturday scrubbing the tank did a massive water change and removed a bunch of rock..... Tank is rocking!!!! What little sps I have left look super happy now with polyp extension for the first time in a long time.. The flow is much better now that I removed a lot of rock also.. And last but not least removing all the dead skeletons made it look great again and got me back in the mood to tighten those laces in my gloves and go for round 2...ding, ding, ding, it's on!!!!! Pix coming soon...1smile1. Never noticed how depressing it is to look at tank with skeletons every where.. It made me Lose intrest but now there gone and I see my lps glowing it's all good again!!! Haha

Yeah man I think I'm gonna go soft now... Got a signature nem coming again to compliment my clowns and then a nice hammer and some colorful softies and lps and call it a day.. It was getting boring watching a tank that nothing moves in lol.... Still got my most wanted sticks so they will reign supreme on top of the tank with all the life below them...;)

If you decide that you want some more sticks, let me know and I'll ship some frags out your way bro

For sure man... Wanna let the tank settle back in... When my brown sticks get color again I'll be in buisness... Thanks man appreciate it....1smile1

I am not sure a penny caused this, some fish foods have copper in. You said it got worse with water changes? I had an issue long time ago with some bad salt. I started to see my sps looking not so good so my first thought was start changing water and things kept getting worse after water changes. Well my salt had no calcium in it or it was not dissolving.

Sorry about your losses..

I can't say the penny did cause it all but it was the nail in the coffin...:(. I had numerous issues like my salinity was out of whack so I'm sure my alk moved around then I got those cured and my sps looked okay but not the greatest.... Then it just kept going down hill and eventually led to what you seen above...

I have to say that it is nice living in the same town as Lee. I had a 100 gallon cube with an internal coast to coast and a seam started to sweat. I shot Lee a PM and few weeks later my new baby was done. I thought I would just through up a quick pict. My tank is almost the exact same as Lee's. 28x28x20 Bean/Rimless with a closed loop. Its not worth doing a built thread since its almost mirror image. (minus the awesome clowns) Not much as far as coral as this time, since its just getting established. It has been up and running approx 2 months now.

Ohh yeah, The scully that is receading is a recovery project. He was at a friends and was almost dead. I have been bringing him back from the dead. I think he will make it.

Very nice, I say it is always good to do a build thread, then you can go back and see what you did if you need too.

I'm using a Dolphin Diamond Amp Master that I picked up dirt cheap. I was going to use a Dart hybred, but the Dolphin was soo cheap. I couldnt pass it up. Im pretty happy with it, almost no heat transfer, and its really quiet. My last Vortec's were just as loud. I think its around 3600 gph running wide open for the closed loop, and just a simple Mag 12 for the return/chiller. There is so much flow in the tank, it looks like the water is boiling. Im just trying to figure out exactly how I want the returns on the closed loop. I just have 45's for now, but they seem to be working well. I think I might heat up the ends and flatten and spread out the end to make the water flow spread out a little more. Right now its kinda of like a hot tub jet and sprays the water in a pretty direct stream. Im just trying to fine turn the flow.

Im really happy with the tank though. No power heads, no visible wires running up to the floating canopy. All the wires are ran internally, through the two canopy supports. I have the tank all set up like I dreamed, now I just have to master the whole coral growing part. This tank is going to stay set up just as it sits for years to come. (this is my 6th tank in 3 years)

Just FYI-Im a huge fan of minimal rock. Its easier to get good water circ, and makes the tank super easy to clean. Just not as many places to place coral. you have to pick a little more carefully when space is limited.
