Hey everyone! šŸ‘‹

After 4 years of running my 22 gallon Mr. Aqua sumpless dream build, it’s finally time to bring it down by upgrading the tank and bringing back a sump. Nothing against sumpless systems (they can be beautiful and simple), but I’ve always hated seeing wires, heaters, and equipment inside the display. With that, I decided to upgrade to a 38 gallon Fiji Peninsula something a little bigger, a little cleaner, but still manageable and fun.

A little history:

I’ve been through a many tanks over the decade with a 40 gallon breeder, 60 gallon cube, a Red Sea 350, a 200 gallon Planet Aquarium (originally designed by Mr. Saltwater Tank), and my most recently a 22 gallon Mr. Aqua. Out of all of them, the smaller tanks have always been the most rewarding. There’s just something about managing a compact system that feels right to me.

The new plan:

My original idea was to reuse the custom stand I built for the 22 gallon as it’s become a conversation piece whenever people visit (ā€œwait, you built that yourself?ā€ šŸ˜… as well as the boss of the home said "the stand isn't going anywhere haha") So I wanted an open concept build with a sump offset to the side with the equipment being visible but organized. Since tanks for this stand were limited and I didn’t want to wait months/years for a custom tank, I landed on a Fiji cube 38 gallon aquarium. I went ahead and drilled it with to be a peninsula tank with the idea of it becoming SPS-dominated. Of course, keeping behind the BTA’s that my clowns have hosted and laid eggs next to it for years.

My approach hasn’t changed: keep it simple, keep it consistent, and let the corals do the talking.

Current Equipment

  • Tank: Fiji 38 gallon drilled (36x15.5x15.5)
  • Overflow: Eshopps Prodigy M Slimline
  • Sump: Fiji 20 2nd Gen
  • Stand: Custom-built by me
  • Lighting: 2x Ecotech Radion XR30w G4 Pro (overkill, but love them šŸ”„)
  • ATO: None (for now)
  • Mechanical Filter: Filter pad cut to size
  • Heater: Eheim Jager 125 watt
  • Powerheads: 2x Ecotech MP10
  • Skimmer: None but may add at some point
  • Return Pump: Ecotech Vectra S2
  • UV: Aqua Ultraviolet 15w (plumbed into return)
  • Controller: Neptune Apex (2016)
  • Rock: Reused from old system (originally bought live rock)
  • Sand: Aquaforest Bio Sand
  • Lid: DIY Mesh Top

That's a beautiful tank. I love the way you designed your sump. It looks very organized and nice.
Thank you! The server raceways definitely helped with covering/organizing the wires. Sadly I couldn't think of anything to hide the plumbing haha

Beautiful and well thought out !
Thank you! I wish I could say I put a ton of planning into it but really I think I put a few hours into the design idea and just started buying away haha

You must be a wizard because it sure looks like you put a ton of planning into it!

And this is why anemone's can't be trusted.... Since running my previous tank for 4 years, I never had my anemones move but with the new tank set up, I kind of was expecting it to happen. However I had the rock island specific to them and didn't want them anywhere else in the tank. I understand thats a tough ask but isn't the point to make things complicated haha. That being said, I had a bat almost nuke my tank overnight. Thankfully nothing seemed harmed but never a pretty sight to wake up to. It looks as if when the mp10 sucked in the anemone, the dry side of the pump felt the vibration and fell off the glass so stopped it from getting completely shredded. I was glad the pump didn't chip the glass or break it for that matter. The question now, is should I buy some mp10 anemone covers or wide flow covers. Never liked the pump guards since I hear they can cause your mp10's to go bad sooner rather than later yet some swear by it.

Everything about your tank looks great! Fantastic photography, cool stand, and great open scape. Can't wait to see where you take this.

Thank you! I must say the open scape is great since I almost bought additional rock but now I look forward to adding sps and seeing them grow out.

And just like that, it happened again so I had to bite the bullet and ordered two different anemone guards. Most would say just get rid of the anemones but I feel obligated to keep my clowns happy šŸ˜‚

I will say the smaller guard is really nice since it provides a wide flow for the mp10 and replaces the original wetside cover giving it a sleek appearance in the display. The second guard goes on top of the original wetside cover which in theory doesn't hurt propeller as I’ve heard some peoples wet sides going bad from the guards that replace the original cover. That being said, I will have to take my chances. The guard on the right will be returned since the bulkiness just wasn’t a good look. For a larger tank, it would be completely fine.

Wideflow guard wins it for me.

I agree. I tried to manually remove what I can but I think I’m going to order a pitho crab since I’ve heard good things about them getting rid of different turf algae’s including bubble algae.

This is a real sleek minimalist tank. I've always wanted an Anemone, but for the reasons you're now discovering I've stayed away. Don't want to risk them stinging over corals / moving around as well as the real potential of nuking my tank

Verery nice! What are u gonna do when the tang grows? Sailfins really need at least 125 when full grown. I don’t know about you but I get way attached to my fish so another upgrade!.🤣

Thank you! I have already encountered my anemones moving a few times. I do believe the new covers for the mp10 have stopped them from getting sucked in and shredded however wishing the anemones stayed on the little island I have is no longer a reality haha. That being said, my clownfish essentially live in them and getting rid of them just won’t work. The risk of them in there will just have to continue….

Haha I agree. Thankfully the only fish I’m really attached to is the clownfish since they are 10 years old. Outside of that I don’t mind rehoming the tang since I have so many local reefers with 300 to 500 gallon reef tanks…. Or maybe I’ll just upgrade to a 150 gallon peninsula in a year or two šŸ˜
