After 10 days with failed home-made bottle trap- it took 2 hours with this to catch the damsel.
Thanks for the idea - super helpful.
Used a piece of tubing to weigh door down - in second picture.
Damsel caught in 3rd.
Thanks!

Here's a simple to make fish trap that works pretty good, well at least for me. LOL. Most of this stuff is misc things that you probably already have.

- Kritter keeper container (Depending on size $5-10) You probably have one from the goldfish you won at the fair
- Tunze magnet or anytype of aquarium magnet or suction cups for mounting. Recommend a magnet so it will be easier to adjust the position of the trap if need be.
- Fishing line
- Fishing egg sinker

Basically drilled some holes so I could zip tie the tunze magnet mount. Another on top of the trap so I could fit the tip of a food baster for squirting food. Last hole drilled on the door flap so I could tie fishing line. I use an egg sinker to add a bit of weight to the door, so the trap stays open. If not, the door flutters in the current.

Haven't tried your version but it looks like it will work not doubting you and a very cheaper option

To catch a Tang I put a large green fish net in the aquarium, for a couple days. Put Butterfly / Angelfish formula, in the net when the lights were going down, with just blue lights on. Caught it in 5 minutes.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make a DIY shrimp trap? I have some peppermint shrimp that need to make a home in my sump :)
I did the plastic bottle method and it worked great! You cut off the top and tape the mouth facing inward toward the center of the bottle. Put shrimp in the bottom and they go in.

I know this is old post, but I need a cheap trap! I can't quite tell how the door is made. Is there an opening on the top that is hinged or is it modified? Anyone know?

No one end remains just open, the end that they will go into. And then when the *Outside magnet is pulled by the string. The open end will turn (flip straight) up in 0.000001 of a second. It then floats straight up to the top of the water in 0.00001 of a second, the open end of the jar is now floating on top of the water. Read above post again... Build this "JUST" like I described it to be done!!!!. You will have this trap for ever! Good luck and Oh buddy does it ever work! This build is perfect to say the least = works perfect not some shutty build idea.. lol Just build it! Post your results for others..

So just to confirm, you attatch the fishing line to the door, and pull it closed when the fish is in the critter keeper?

I am going to need one of these soon.

I must be dumb because I can't figure this out. So you pull the outside magnet off the glass, but what closes the door?

I think people are talking about 2 different types of traps here (the dollar store trap, and the one from the OP with the travel fishbox (like the one I just picked up for $10). The OP used the Fishbox thing. He might have used a magnet on the door to keep it shut once it was pulled shut. He used (I think) a Tunze magnet to "mount" the box to the Aquarium wall. A string goes neatly from the door through the door latch so it can pull the door shut.

You need to drill the hole to attach the string, and I drilled some holes for some Zip Ties so i can use a hanger over the lip of the tank as well as a magnet inside of the box.

I know this thread is old but I’m resurrecting it to say THANK YOU!! this trap worked awesome!

I bought the critter cage at my LFS drilled a hole in one end to be the top so I could put food in there. Also suctioned a nori clip to the vertical wall. The critter cage came with aquarium rocks in it. Dumped those but super glued 6 of them to the door as the weight. Tied a fishing line to the door and ran it through the loop I removed the handle from. Baited it and let the fish get used to it for 24 hours. The next day they had no fear if it. A little food inside led to all the fish going in and out. When my chocolate tang whose bullying my gem tang went in I pulled the string snd the door closed. Caught him no problem. Oh snd I attached it to the glass with my unused frag rack. Frag rack outside the glass with the small magnet inside the trap!

Anyway, this is an awesome trap. Thanks so much for sharing it. Bumping this to the top for more to see!

Old thread, but somebody give the OP a medal! Just successfully tried this exact method to get a Tomini tang that was outgrowing my 55g reef out of it!
