Great topic! I was just thinking about asking a question like this. I do name all of my fish:

Yellow Tang: Opal
Maroon Clown: Mary
Gladiator Clown: Bruce
Fire Goby: Karyn
Mandarinfish: Ruth
Red Dragonette: Fred
Fire Shrimp: Prudence
Urchin: The Lawn Mower

I know the fire shrimp and urchin are not shrimp, but they are so unique that they deserve names too. Because I work from home these days, I get to check in on their drama all day. As many of you would suspect, Mary is definitely the sassiest of the tank. Anyways, I could go on and on. Clearly, I need to get out of the apartment more.

When I do name the fish, they died. It is best not to think heavy thoughts. For my other pets, I tried to follow the same rule....

My first 2 cows had ear tags. 21 and 23. I was asked what are their names. When I yelled for them to come, I called out "21" and "23", they would come a running. Luckily, we did not eat them nor did they die. So, maybe it's best not to name our pets.
However, I named my daughters after pet dogs I had as a kid. So, i failed in my own logic.
