I just picked this coral up a couple of weeks ago and was wondering if anyone has seen it before and if it was named? If not I'm gonna give it one............

Lol, the reason a coral has a name is because a person and/or company of interest has sold that coral generally in a limited or as available fashion and thus the coral is "named". The coral you posted is a pink chalice. If it were named you'd have known when you purchased it.

Thus I was asking this MASSIVE reefing community if they had ever seen it named. I have 1 LFS in my area and believe me they get in corals that are "named" but they don't sell them with the names. Thats just the way it is here. Thanks for the input though. I'm gonna call it the Franken Berry chalice. LOL

Your lfs gets in corals that are wild? If so IMO they are doing you and their other customers wrong by putting a name on them if it's wild it's a green with red eye chalice not a mummy eye. To me naming a coral implies that it's been captive grown and is not just a wild specimen.

This whole naming thing has to go IMO.

Dave: don't think I've seen a similar one with a name, but check out the cornbred cotton candy- it's almost a reverse of that (if my memory serves correctly...)

So maybe it's the Dave Backwards Cotton Candy? I think that'd work

Madreef: IMO you're wrong- however this is an ID thread, not a thread for discussing the very common practice of naming corals for simplification of IDing. If you want to talk about that, there's over 30 threads in the general reef discussion that go back and forth on it, join in there

No my LFS does not name the wild stuff. Actually they don't get much wild stuff in. He just doesnt remember the names of stuff. He is just that way. I have seen his orders come in and the invoices with them so that is how I know he gets named corals.

Lol- there's nothing wrong with naming wild stuff even if that is what he got in. My cat is named Puma- not Black Felis Catus :xd:

LOL, actually that would be black felis domesticus. And most people wouldn't know that any more than they know the scientific names of their corals.

Named or not names EVERY coral was wild at one point. So naming a wild coral is no different than naming a tank raised coral. As a matter of fact I dont know of any named coral that was captive raised. All of these named chalice came from the wild and were not created from spawning or "coral mating". I know of many vendors that get them from suppliers (I see the supplier photos) and throw a good name on them within a week of them being harvested from the ocean.

To answer the question of the poster, I have never seen it before and its a nice chalice. Give it a good name!

Thank you reefpets! I am still trying to think up a cool name for it! Something a little more catchy than pink chalice coral as suggested above. LOL.
