Dosing is always cheaper and usually more precise and effective than solving low element needs by water change.

What are you reluctant to dose?

Ignorance I suppose , and trusting the effectiveness. I have had too many close calls, and as in the old story you get set in your ways. I am doing the trace elements , and am pleased so wanted to know what else is out there. For instance the balling method you were discussing confused me as to what you and others were trying to achieve, as a lot of it was above my knowledge and not dissected enough for me if that makes sense. My background is not chemistry

The basic idea is hard corals and coralline algae rapidly deplete calcium and alkalinity to form calcium carbonate. Some other organisms too, from snails to clams and even some soft corals. Declining alk is the first sign you need to dose.

There are many different ways to successfully dose calcium and alk, from one parts to four part systems.
