As to the question/comment - Can the rock/etc etc be saturated such that nothing else can be added - and how to test
start with xxx rock and .05 ammonia. Once processed - increase to 1 ppm ammonia. Once processed increase to 2 ppm ammonia, etc etc etc - I do not think its 'unlimited'. I also think that most 'reef tanks' - far underuse the surface area of their tanks with regards to ammonia processing.
This directly might contradict the comments of some that say - all of the rocks, surfaces in a tank will be colonized - and are at maximal capacity. This I do not believe (unless they have been exposed to a higher level of ammonia before - and are now dormant and slowly declining)
