As to the question/comment - Can the rock/etc etc be saturated such that nothing else can be added - and how to test

start with xxx rock and .05 ammonia. Once processed - increase to 1 ppm ammonia. Once processed increase to 2 ppm ammonia, etc etc etc - I do not think its 'unlimited'. I also think that most 'reef tanks' - far underuse the surface area of their tanks with regards to ammonia processing.

This directly might contradict the comments of some that say - all of the rocks, surfaces in a tank will be colonized - and are at maximal capacity. This I do not believe (unless they have been exposed to a higher level of ammonia before - and are now dormant and slowly declining)

I'm not sure its worth anyone's time to go through a paper (in Freshwater) - trying to determine where you get the conclusion you did. I did not see anything - that suggested that what you said is 'true'. (i.e. that surface area is not a limiting factor). To do that - they would have to keep adding bioload - until the ammonia increased faster/more than the surface could take up. I might have misread the study - I didnt see anything related to that.

I wouldn't have thought you could max it out easily, but it sure seemed to be what was happening with my experiment tank.

I went from adding 3ppm that was processed in 42.5 hours... to processing it in 32.5 hours... to processing it in 31 hours.

Yes, it was still processing faster than the time before... but it was slowing down and it sure wasn't doubling every 15-24 hours.

This is what I was trying to say - I think it can be 'maximized' - with regards to surface area (not including particulates in the water) - But - as I suggested in another thread - lets say you have a 50 gallon tan with 2 clowns - stable with live rock - for 3 months - if you added 30 more clowns - and anemones - I do not think you would have a positive result

Yeah, possibly not if there was plenty dormant present and waiting.

I don't know about 30 more though all at once, lol
