Hello! I had a reef tank, not too long but i got the basics. Now i want my bigger tank to have jaw fish.
Its 85 x 85 x 50 (h) cm and i want to have at least a pair inside. My biggest concern is the deep sand bed . A lot of different thoughts can be seen. Two main thoughts that trouble me:
1. Crushed coral+shells on top for jaw fish cavern - okay how much of it would i need? I can get this is it good enough:
https://www.saltwateraquarium.com/iceland-black-sand-3-0-5-0-mm-25kg-bucket-reef-flowers/

or i can get 5+ mm aragonite , is it necesarry for the fish that it is crushed coral, i can get that too, but it is very expensive here.

2. Crushed coral makes DSB unstable cause it traps gas or something. So jawfish will make the cavern and do exactly that. It will mix crushed coral and fine sand.

My thought is to get 4" of fine sand 1-2" of 1-2 mm sand and a bit of crushed coral.

Will DSB become unstable with jaw fish , since they are carnivores and would eat some cuc? What CUC do you reccomend with them to keep the sand relatively stable?

My way of action would be : Starting it up, putting cuc and soft corals, letting it mature a month or two with bacteria and adding two jaw fish to disturb the dsb as soon as possible to have less effect on gas release.

I need advice! Tia :)

I have read that jawfish need about 4” or 10 cm of rubbly sand. I suppose you could get away with a few spot of deep sand rubble and the jawfish would find them.
