Fairy wrasse shipping deaths

I recently bought 5 wrasses from a reputable supplier. They do TTM and I have received excellent healthy fish from them before. It was flown from a different state but due to flight delays, the fish was probably in the bag for longer than expected but no more than 8 hours.

Anyway both fairy wrasses came extremely stressed and near death and subsequently died. One was a Scott’s and one was a beau wrasse. Stunning fish and so sad they both died.

The carpenter, yellow corris and Timor are fine and thriving.

My question is, are fairy wrasse more prone to shipping stress? I am wondering whether it’s worth trying them again or whether I should try some other wrasses that are more resilient to shipping stress. Are there other beautiful reef safe wrasses you would recommend?

The supplier is also devastated and kindly offered to credit us.

Yea of course that’s the case. But it seems perhaps some fish are more prone then others?

I have received 8 other fish without issues.

Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw.

Actually of the wrasse fairies handle shipping better than most. The sand sleepers generally do badly with tamarin, leopard, and pencil wrasses being the worst.

I would also say that a Scott’s is not a peaceful fish. They are very aggressive for a fairy wrasse. If you have a carpenter wrasse you should stick with the smaller fairy wrasse.
Favorites of those are the exquisite, Naoko, rhomboid, hooded flame, and Lubbocks.

I had the same issues, I find wrasses tend to be worse with shipping then most fish

Males of most wrasse are a PITA to get through shipping, Scottorum is the worst for it. They’re often brought in as ‘Supermales’ and just don’t ship well as they’re more prone to stressing and then having a spasm in the bag which leads to hiding the bag and damaging their mouth and possibly even spine.

Unfortunately there isn’t a chart for Paracheilinus however most will be compatible. Your best bet is asking in the Wrasse Lovers Thread about what’ll be compatible for your tank and other inhabitants (some Flashers can be more boisterous than others).
