thats a loaded question...

me personally I buy what I like not what is popular whats popular and price will tend to be a big difference I would imagine it is the smae for most hobbist out there but some have to have names on corals. I like to keep it simple as names I will forget regardless of who it came from everything is a stick or a chalice or a zoas/ paly to me.

Ok to sort of re-frame the question. Why do you like a certain species over another. Staghorn acro vs millipora etc... I dont want to get a whole lot but I want to make a better informed decision than how a small pic looks on ebay. Like why peopledont like tables or prefer birdnest for lower light requirements

I agree with going off of looks. I personally like millepora. I really like the type and extension of the polyps. I always look for bright contrasting colors in my corals. Also anything that will just pop in my tank.

Good luck.

the choices of course are endless
- color - sometimes hard to tell from a frag but its nice when the tips or polyps are different colored then the body
- growth form should match the place in the tank ie stags where you want height, tables where you want need horizontal and bushies fill space in both directions
- polyp extention millis are hairy and "deepwaters" are bare some of each is nice

some of my all time favs include - A. millipora, A. tenuis, A. valida, A. granulosa (rosaria or lokani), A. echinata (speciosa or turaki) and many ORA types like chips, red planet, and both their blue torts
i don't have many real exotics - no need to when you do SPS, as many of the no names are as nice or nicer
even if your going to buy frags from auction, LA's DD is a good place to look at pictures of many species - check their mariculture and wild caught pages, this will give you an idea what frags grow into to help you make choices for growth form
