Filling a tank... on a well...

Have you had your well water tested?
I have been running my tanks on straight well water for 2 years at 2 different houses. Not saying its right. I have a rodi to install but if water tests okay i would do first fill off the well for cycling and then switch to rodi after that.

especially if worrying about running dry. I plan to capture my rodi waste water for gardening in a 300g ibc tote and when that is full the overflow will go into our pond.
 
So in theory it shouldnt run dry then? I mean if he has a 100GPD unit it should only be drawing less than 22ml of water a second and the waste water should be returned up to 18ml/s to the well. These arent mind blowing flow rates.


Not sure where you got 9000gal of waste water from. 98% rejection rate for the RO membrane means the membrane can filter out 98% of the TDS in the water, it does not mean it rejects 98% of the water going in.. Meaning water with 100TDS going in will have 2TDS going out. The amount of waste water an RODI produces depends on the restrictor valve on the waste water line, and its usually a 1:4 ratio. So if you make 100gal a day you produces 400 gal of waste water.
So that was originally how I thought it worked, until I was working with a water company to clean up the water coming into the house and they told me they other way. It would be really nice If it was 4:1 or similar to that, cause that would only be 800-1000 gallons.
No actually the water company is wrong. Usually they are around 1:3 or 1:4 good:waste. An easy way to test your unit is to run it for a few minutes and capture the good in one measuring cup and the waste in the other.
 
man i do too! if this calculation is correct, im shocked. i had no idea there was that much waste!
Glad I posted... looks like the one water company almost bamboozled me back in the day.

Be careful. I would think if you're starting to get mud, that mud COULD be grinding up your well pump too.
Its very fine manganese. Gets through our 100 micron filters.

I mean, cant you just discharge the waste water back into the well so it doesnt run dry and wont waste water?
We do discharge it into our sump, which discharges just past the well.

When it goes down the drain, it returns to the ground refiltered.
Out here we do use septic and leach fields, and the sumps just water the grass, so yep.

As far as returning water to the well, I dont have a line returning water to the well.

As for rejection rate, that is what I had been told originally a long time ago by a water professional. I thought it was only 4:1 type ratio, but they insisted the percentage.

When we moved and had our first well I reached out to a water company (culligan type of thing) since our water would occasionally turn rust color and smelled like rotten egg. They came out to do a free water test, and told us we needed a water softner, and recommended a whole home RO system (which is when they told me the rejection rate equals the gallons). I figured they are the experts, but I ended up buying and installing the softner myself instead of paying them a monthly fee. It worked, but not great.

Later on, I reached out to Aquascience.net (much better company!!!). They asked me to send two vials of water and came back with results and recommended a Katalox/Carbon system to clean out the sulfur, manganese, and iron in the water (high TDS). They said to install that before the water softner, and that would bring out TDS down to under 100, and then the water softner would help with the last little bit. I have a Typhoon Extreme III after the water softner.

Yes, very high TDS. Fluctuates drastically with the rain.

Yep, see above. I originally thought it was like that, but got told other wise by a water company. Never thought about it again until recently, and the posts made me research it some more.
 
There is a such thing as a 0 waste RO unit. They return the waste water back to the plumbing in the house.

The waste water out of or RO unit is "generally" cleaner than the tap water going into it because it has already been filtered by the sediment and carbon filters.
 
The membrane claims 98% rejection rate which would be crazy high, but assuming less then efficient, even at 90%, that would be 1,800 total gallons of water.

rejection rate is salt rejection not waste water. Most hobbyist have their RODI have there waste;good for 2-4:1

Ya they definitely bamboozled you. I was curious in the beginning on how long it would take my unit to fill up my tank and also check the ratio. If I remember right I was around 1:3.5.

As someone else posted at a 1:4 ratio with 180 gallon tank you should be around 900 gallons total (180:720). I’m not sure what your gpd output of your to membrane is. But assuming 100 gpd that would equate to 4.17 gallons per hour or .069 gallons per minute. Take that and multiply by 5 (your good + waste assuming 1:4) and you get a water usage of .35 gallons per minute. A good recovery rate on a well system is in the range of 5-10 gallons per minute. It’s sounds like you have a decent recovery rate judging off what you said about drawing mud and being able to resume normal activities later in the day.

If you have a 50gpd system you’d half the 0.35, if it’s a 200gpd you’d need to double it. That’s also assuming a 1:4. If it’s 1:3 than those number go down.

Growing up my parents used to have issues with their well this time of year. It wouldn’t run dry and stay dry but it would only partially fill so they had to becareful about drawing too much at one time. Once mom got a front load washer though they never had to worry about it again.

Yeah, I make 5 gallons of RODI at a time and waste about 8 gallons to make it.

It all depends on the quality of the source water, efficiency of the filters, the pressure, and the temperature.
 
Stack RO membranes for a more efficient rejection rate. I’ve got 3 75gpd ro membranes with a booster pump running at 90psi and my rejection rate is about 1:1.25. TDS staring out is around 400ppm. I flush them before and after every run and haven’t had any filter issues yet after a few thousand gallons.
