I use mine on and off (more off than on lately).

They do clean the water, but also pull
out particles that the corals feed on.

So I tend to use them for a while,
then run without for a while.

i have found great deals on slightly used ones on these forums. i got 5 shipped for $15...all looked to be new!

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I like the idea of making them yourself. I'm a DIYer as much as possible and it can't be hard to make some filter socks. Keep the ideas coming if you have one.

Here is a pic of my DIY filter sock. Some people even sew the plastic rings into them just cut small pieces of a large diameter pvc pipe for the ring. I made handles and just slide a piece of small pvc pipe through them across the top of the sump in the corner;

when i am on top of my game, i swap twice daily. i go home for lunch every day so i swap it at lunch and before bed.

otherwise i just change daily before bed.

i'm a firm believer in keeping them as clean as possible. ;)

every 2 to 3 days. I have 5 that I rotate at a time. I wash them after I switch 4 then start over.
